OLLU students explored new ways to express their creativity when Gloria “Triz” Rodriguez, Ph.D., the IFCC Artist-in-Residence, guest-taught Drawing I and II courses in the Visual and New Media Arts program under the direction of Professor Suzy Gonzalez.
During Monday and Wednesday sessions last week, Rodriguez introduced students to Stylewriting, sharing her work and discussing the art form’s history and terminology. Students developed unique names and explored “tagging” and “bombing” using markers and spray-painting techniques.
The experience expanded students’ exposure to artistic materials and approaches while connecting classroom learning with a practicing artist’s perspective. Exploring lettering, personal style and new techniques gave students opportunities to experiment, develop their artistic voices and consider forms of expression beyond traditional drawing.
The collaboration also highlighted the opportunities available in OLLU’s close-knit learning environment, where faculty and artists can work together to bring new perspectives into the classroom.
Creativity on Display
Working on temporary walls made from industrial plastic wrap, students transformed the area between the MARC and Metz Hall into an outdoor creative space that drew interest from passing students and staff.
Their work will remain on display throughout the week and during the third annual Hip Hop We Don’t Stop Summit. Students, staff, faculty, and alumni are invited to explore Stylewriting using temporary and portable tagging walls.
