OLLU mourns the loss of Sister Annie B and Sister Berenice Trachta

The OLLU community has lost two beloved CDPs, Sister Ann Bernadette “Annie B” Laubert and Sister Mary Berenice Trachta.

Sister Ann Bernadette Laubert, better known as Sister Annie B, passed away on Sunday. Sister Annie B served Our Lady of the Lake for 57 years, 47 of those years in food service. She arrived at the convent in 1940, and became a novice in 1942, when she received the name “Sister Ann Bernadette.” She began her work at the college in 1943 in housekeeping and moved to food service a decade later, where she cooked, baked and served for generations of students. The OLLU cafeteria was named in her honor, a tribute to her dedication, kindness and caring. She is remembered by alumni for always knowing the students’ favorite things to eat.

Sister Mary Berenice Trachta passed away Friday at the age of 105. She taught Biology and Religious Studies at OLLU for a number of years.

Sister Berenice earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Our Lady of the Lake College, a master’s degree in biochemistry from Catholic University, a master’s degree in sacred theology from University of Notre Dame, and was one of the first women in the country to receive a PhD in sacred theology from St. Mary’s College at Notre Dame in 1962.

She taught chemistry, biology, and religious studies at OLLU for many years between 1938-1988. From the beginning of her time on campus, Sister Berenice engaged students at the university in teaching religion at the neighboring parishes—a practice that continues today as a program sponsored by University Ministry. She served as Chair of Religious Studies from 1962-1976. Later, she led several tours to the Holy Land and taught as many as nine Bible classes at one time at various San Antonio parishes until 2002.

Sister Berenice was the oldest CDP in history.
