Golf Head Coach Arnie Martinez takes first place at Assistants Winter Classic

The men’s golf Head Coach Arnie Martinez placed first in the Assistants Winter Classic as part of the Southern Texas PGA Section in February.

Martinez paired with KC Lim and the duo shot six-under-par in the single-round tournament. They birdied seven holes which ranked first among all participants. They closed the round strong by shooting a birdie on the 14th, 15th and 17th hole.

Taking first place isn’t a new experience for Martinez. He was victorious at this tournament in 2019 alongside Shane Pearson. They shot four-under-par with five birdies and only one bogey. Martinez has competed in seven tournaments in the Southern Texas PGA Section throughout his career.

Martinez is a native of San Antonio and played collegiate golf at Schreiner University. He also attended OLLU and was part of the inaugural golf team. Martinez won the Greater San Antonio Men’s City Championship in 2013. He qualified into Sectionals for the U.S. Open in 2017 and has been the head coach at OLLU since 2019.

Kane Ybarra (SR/San Antonio, Texas) of the OLLU men’s golf team took home first place in the San Antonio Shootout on Feb. 23. Two weeks later, he missed another first-place finish by four strokes.

The golf team will head to Dallas on March 28 for the SWCU Cedar Crest GC.
