Community invited to attend ‘Dvorak’ hosted by TPR

DvorakThe OLLU community is invited to attend “TPR Presents: Dvorak,” tonight at 7 p.m. in Thiry Auditorium.

The concert, hosted by Texas Public Radio, is a preview of the upcoming Dvorak Festival from several local performing arts organizations. Each group will present its interpretation of the work of Antonin Dvorak, one of the great composers of the 19th century. Groups include, the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, Youth Orchestras of San Antonio and Alamo Arts Ballet Theater.

There will be a reception following the concert.

Admission is a suggested donation of $10.

‘Find the Power of Providence’ at retreat hosted by Sister Joyce Detzel, CDP

d-detzel-2Students, staff and faculty are invited to attend, “Finding the Power of Providence in Your Everyday Life,” Feb. 1 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Elliott House. Sister Joyce Detzel, CDP, will lead the retreat.

For deeper engagement, participants are also invited to attend an optional overnight retreat at the convent for single Catholic women open to exploring the possibility of a call from God to respond to the power of Providence as a Sister of Divine Providence.

Help raise money for OLLU students and enjoy some Cajun-inspired fun at ‘Down on the Bayou’

DownontheBayouThe Division of Mission and Ministry and the Congregation of Divine Providence are teaming up to host “Down on the Bayou,” Feb. 15 from 6-10 p.m. in Chapel Auditorium.

The night of Cajun food, music, dancing and a silent auction will raise money to help OLLU students who will be making a pilgrimage to France to follow in the footsteps of Fr. John Martin Moye, founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence.

Tickets are $75 per person or $500 for a table of eight.

Help OLLU improve ‘Best of the West,’ enter to win $50 gift certificate

BOTW2014“Best of the West,” OLLU’s official Fiesta® event, is entering its third year and the Institutional Advancement Office would like to hear from the OLLU community to help make this year’s event the best so far. Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to take this survey to provide their feedback on the event.

Once the survey is completed, participants will have the opportunity to submit their name and contact information for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate for OLLUSaintsGear.com where they can order a variety of apparel, spirit and decorative items branded with the OLLU or Saints logo.

This year’s “Best of the West” event is scheduled to take place on campus April 5, 2014.  

Deadline to apply for spring commencement extended to Wednesday

Because offices were closed on Jan. 24, the deadline to submit an application for spring graduation has been extended to Wednesday, Jan. 29. Students who plan to graduate at the end of the spring semester and take part in the May commencement ceremonies must apply for graduation by Wednesday with the Registrar’s Office. Visit the Registrar’s webpage or stop by the office in the Walter Center.

Men’s basketball dominates Texas College to 103-76 win


MensBballvsTexasCollege2The men’s basketball team defeated Texas College 103-76 on Saturday evening. The win moves the Saints to 8-7 overall and 3-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference. Texas College drops to 3-10 overall and 1-6 in conference. Head Coach Ryan Wall said, “It was a great game, both the starters and the bench produced. Marcus Thompson had a good game — he sets the tone for everyone to follow.” Xavier Roberson ended with 29 points, including seven 3-pointers, one field goal and six free throws. Dylan Elias and De’Quentin Greer both scored 14 points, with Greer grabbing five steals. Brock Hunter added 12 points, four assists and three steals. Thompson ended with 11 assists, seven steals, four rebounds and nine points. The Saints will return to the court today when they travel to Austin to play Huston-Tillotson University at 7:30 p.m. Read full story online.

Women’s basketball overpowers Texas College with 107-57 win


WomensBballvsTexasCollegeThe women’s basketball team continued its dominance on the court after its fourth 38-plus win in eight days. The Saints’ 107-57 win over Texas College moves them to 13-1 overall and 4-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference. Texas College drops to 0-18 overall and 0-7 in conference. Head Coach Christopher Minner said, “I thought we played with good intensity, plus we won the rebounding battle and our energy level stayed the same. Everyone knows we can shoot and press, so the key for us to win is to get those rebounds.” Every player on the Saints squad saw court time, and everyone put points on the board with Bayliss leading at 19 points including 6-of-15 from the field, 5-of-8 from 3-point range and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. Nashae Owens followed with 16 points, five assists and two steals. Electra Roberts scored 12 points, while Sequestiny O’Neal finished with 10. Ornela Bacchini finished with 14 rebounds and nine points. The team shot 43 percent from the field, 32 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the free-throw line. They forced 36 turnovers while committing 22. The Saints will play their next game on the road in Austin tonight. OLLU Big Blue Podcast: Coach Sherman talks about adding track and field to his duties

The athletes talk about their experiences on the playing field, how they helped their team succeed and a variety of other topics. Martin also partners with Michael Thompson, the Voice of the Saints, to discuss the week’s competitions. Michael is the play-by-play announcer for Saints basketball and volleyball. Women’s soccer signs three freshmen to 2014 squad


shield_ollu_womens_socr_blkThe women’s soccer team and Head Coach Arthur Salazar announced the signing of three freshmen to its 2014 squad. Carolina Aguilar from Spring, Texas; Grayson Manfredo from Round Rock, Texas; and Maggie Miller from Manhattan, Kan. signed letters of intent on Monday at the University. The Saints are coming off their best season ever after finishing with a 16-3-1 overall and 6-0 conference record. The team won the Red River Athletic Conference Regular Season and the Conference Tournament for the first time since beginning competition in 2008. The Saints qualified for the NAIA regional tournament, where they lost to Concordia 1-0. At the conclusion of the season, the Saints received a No. 19 ranking in the 2013 NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll. The team will begin its season in August of 2014.
