OLLU’s Taylor Hamilton named NAIA First-Team All-American

2015TaylorHamilton13The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the 2015-2016 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball All-America Teams Thursday. Players were selected by the NAIA-Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America Committee. Taylor Hamilton was selected to the First Team — the first basketball student-athlete in OLLU history to be named to the All-America First Team, and only the second at OLLU to earn this distinction. The other was golfer Aaron Flores, who was selected to the All-America First Team in 2012-2013. OLLU senior Sonji Green was named to the All-America Honorable Mention Team. Read more.

OLLU’s Joe Jackson selected to NAIA All-America Second Team

JoeJackson2015-1The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the 2015-2016 Division I Men’s Basketball All-America Teams on Thursday. Joe Jackson (JR/San Antonio, Texas) was selected to the All-America Second Team. Jackson is the seventh OLLU men’s basketball student-athlete to be selected to the All-America Team. Previous Second Team selections were Robert Martinez (2012-2013) and Xavier Roberson (2013-2014). Honorable Mention selections were Dionelle Rucker (2009-2010), Robert Martinez (2010-2011), Marco Cooper (2011-2012) and Daniel Skinner (2014-2015). Read more.

OLLU baseball takes three of four games in conference series against Wiley College

BaseballThe baseball team improved to 11-5 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) after winning three out of four games against Wiley College (WC) Friday and Saturday at the Missions Baseball Academy. The Saints opened up with 2-1 and 4-0 victories on Friday, and split the final two games on Saturday dropping the first game 5-1 and winning the second 7-3. Overall OLLU now sits at 19-16 while WC drops to 11-21 and 6-10 in conference. Read more.

OLLU to unveil 2016 Fiesta® medal on Friday

2016 OLLU Fiesta MedalThe OLLU 2016 Fiesta® Medal will be unveiled Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the University Mall Area.

After the medal is unveiled, it will be available for purchase for $8 each in the Bookstore. Medals from 2012, 2013 and 2014 (limited quantities) will also be available for $6 each. Medals can also be able to be purchased online at www.bkstr.com/ollustore/home.

Medals will also be available for $8 at the Fiesta® store, located on Broadway, beginning Friday.

OLLU’s 2016 Literary Festival begins next week

OLLU’s annual Literary Festival will begin next week. The festival features a diverse line up of authors. Below are a few of the highlights of the festival:

  • April 5: Author Shelley Ettinger will hold a reading at 7 p.m. in the Library Community Room
  • April 6: Author Sarah Bird will hold a reading at 7 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room
  • April 7: OLLU’s Visiting Writer Lex Williford will hold a reading at 7 p.m. in the Library Community Room.

Students give back during vOLLUnteer Impact

vOLLUnteer Impact 2016-Group_PictureEarlier this month, more than 100 students participated in the OLLU vOLLUnteer Unity Council’s (VUC) vOLLUnteer Impact Day. Volunteers were divided up to help at five different nonprofit agencies: SAMMinistries, The DoSeum, San Antonio Pets Alive, Reaching Maximum Independence, and the Salvation Army.

Mariachi de los Santos looking for new members

OLLU’s new Mariachi group, Mariachi de los Santos, will be holding auditions for new members. The group rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:45-6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building. The group will perform on and off campus and those who make the group will receive one elective credit hour.
