The women’s basketball team defeated Jarvis Christian College (JCC) 101-91 on Thursday as the Saints celebrated Senior’s Night. The Saints improve to 2-3 overall and the Bulldogs drop to 0-8 overall and in Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play. The Saints honored Zerina Shatri (SR/Istog, Kosovo) during Senior’s Night.
History
The Saints are 21-2 against JCC all-time and won both matchups last season.
Basics
The Bulldogs started strong in the first quarter and jumped out to a 19-9 lead. The Saints were able to reduce the deficit to six points heading into the second quarter. Cormia Lewis (FR/Houston, Texas) hit a three-point shot and two field goals a few minutes into the second quarter to give the Saints a one-point advantage. OLLU led by four at halftime and shot 9-for-21 during the second quarter.
The Saints took control of the game during the third quarter and led by as many as 13 points. The Bulldogs fought back in the fourth quarter and eventually cut the deficit to six points. JCC was forced to foul and the Saints ended up winning by 10 points.
Offensive/defensive standouts
Shatri led the Saints in scoring with 22 points, followed by Cormia Lewis with 20 points, Tiffany Lopez (SO/San Antonio, Texas) with 18 and Angeline Sanchez (SO/Cibolo, Texas) with 17. Shatri and Lopez led the team with nine rebounds each. Natalia Trevino (SO/Laredo, Texas) led the Saints with seven assists.
JCC was led by Brianna Page with 25 points. Tianie Johnson and Joi Reed grabbed nine rebounds apiece. Daeja Monroe led the Bulldogs with four assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 37-of-77 shooting for 48.1 percent, 15-of-30 from three-point range for 50 percent and 12-of-14 from the free-throw line for 85.7 percent. JCC shot 38-of-78 for 48.7 percent, 11-of-26 three-pointers for 42.3 percent and 4-of-9 from the free-throw line for 44.4 percent.
The Saints grabbed 39 rebounds while the Bulldogs collected 45. OLLU forced 20 turnovers and committed 13.
