Howard Jones, sponsored programs officer, was elected treasurer of the Texas Hispanic Serving Institutions Consortium at its recent conference held in Dallas. OLLU is a member of the consortium, which works to provide an arena where HSIs can work together, build partnerships, collaborate, establish working relationships and learn best practices.

Not too late to donate to United Way
Every year, OLLU participates in the United Way Campaign. Money raised by the campaign will help provide support for children, families and individuals across San Antonio and Bexar County. Last year, the OLLU community contributed more than $11,000, which represented a 31 percent employee participation rate. Pledge forms have been distributed to all employees and the deadline to return them is Nov. 15.
Forms should be returned to Amelia Guzman, assistant to the vice president for Student Life, in Providence Hall, Room 104.

During the October Staff Organization meeting, Cathy Maule, assistant director of marketing and communications: brand manager and lead designer, was named Employee of the Month for September.

OLLU employees encouraged to sign up for service day
OLLU faculty and staff are invited to participate in a service project as part of “OLLU Service Day,” Friday, Oct. 18 from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Seton Home. Those who wish to participate should sign up by Oct. 9.
Seton Home is a nonprofit that gives assistance to teenage mothers and their children. Participants will assist in or more of the following tasks: turning mulch in gardens and playgrounds, power washing sidewalks, painting part of a mural, assisting with the Angel Tree project, clean up, and light custodial work among other tasks.
OLLU Service Day is a University-approved initiative so employees do not need to submit vacation time in order to participate.
Employees who wish to participate should email Jennifer Bendele, director of the Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism at jbendele@ollusa.edu. Staff must obtain approval from their supervisor to participate.

Annual Blackboard Users Conference to take place this month
The Texas Blackboard Users Group annual conference will be held Oct. 24-25 at the Holiday Inn San Antonio International Airport.
The conference will offer various presentations including support, program director roundtables, and breakout sessions directly for faculty and instructional designers.
Keynote speakers will include
- Maurice Heilblum, Senior Vice President, Higher Education, Corporate and Government Markets
- Dr. Tim Chester, Vice President for Information Technology at University of Georgia
- Dr. Belle Wheelan, President of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Faculty member presents during conference
Hamid Khan, EDD, PE professor of management, presented the peer-reviewed article, “Examining Authentic Leadership Traits of the Successful CEO’s,” at the Academy of Business Research (ABR) Fall 2013 Conference held Sept. 18-20, in San Antonio. He also chaired two technical sessions of the conference on the themes of management and human resource management.
Faculty member gives presentation on spirituality
Jane Grovijahn, PhD, professor of Religious Studies, recently returned from Dresden, Germany where she gave a presentation on the spirituality of Dorothee Soelle in response to queer suicides at the European Society of Women in Theological Research.
