GRE preparation course available spring 2014

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is the entrance exam for graduate studies and OLLU will offer a preparation course for the test.

PSYC 5362 GRE Exam Preparation will be offered in the spring 2014 semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-2:45 p.m. The course will teach students test-taking skills to help them earn a higher score on the new GRE.

Freshmen students can learn about majors and minors at ‘Academicopoly’

All first-year students are invited to attend “Academicopoly,” Oct. 25 from noon-1:30 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room and Providence Hall, Blue Room. “Academicopoly” is an event that gives first-year students the opportunity to learn more about their academic program or consider other majors and minors at OLLU. Deans, faculty and academic advisers will be available to answer questions about programs and majors. There will be food and prizes.

Counseling Services helping students manage test anxiety

OLLU Counseling Services is hosting the event, “Managing Test Anxiety,” on Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. in the Providence Hall, Blue Room. The event will include a group discussion to help students learn ways to manage test anxiety.

New Legislation: Notification of Penalty for False Alarms (House Bill No. 1284)

The following message is mandated by Texas Law, House Bill 1284 

Making a false threat at any Texas higher education institution is now considered a state jail felony, not a Class A misdemeanor, according to a new law passed this summer by the Texas Legislature.

House Bill 1284 was enacted in response to several threats this past year at several universities across the U.S. that disrupted classes and prompted evacuation of campus property, even though the reports turned out to be a hoax.

The Texas bill relates to the offense of making or causing a false alarm or report involving a public or private institution of higher education. A person commits an offense under Section 42.06, Texas Penal Code, if he or she knowingly initiates, communicates or circulates a report of a present, past, or future bombing, fire, offense, or other emergency that he or she knows is false or baseless and that would ordinarily:

1.    Cause action by an official or volunteer agency organized to deal with emergencies;

2.    Place a person in fear of imminent serious bodily injury; or

3.    Prevent or interrupt the occupation of a building, room, place of assembly, place to which the public has access, or aircraft, automobile, or other mode of conveyance.

An individual adjudged guilty of a state jail felony shall be punished by confinement in a state jail for any term of not more than two years or less than 180 days and, in addition to confinement, may be punished by a fine not to exceed $10,000.

Two students receive academic scholarships

OLLU students Naila Ramiro and Kevin Meraz have been selected to receive the Adelante/Ford Motor Company Future Leaders Scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Miller Brewing and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) established Adelante U.S. Education Leadership Fund, a nonprofit organization focused on breaking the trend of Hispanic non-graduates and furthering their educational future.

This scholarship is for college students of Hispanic descent who have completed at least 30 credit hours of college course work. To qualify, applicants must be majoring in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics).

Both recipients will receive $2000 this academic year.

Join ABS for a screening of ‘42: The Jackie Robinson Story’

HALO hosting public speaking competition

Higher Achievement through Leadership Opportunities (HALO) is hosting a public speaking competition Sept. 24 from 4-6 p.m. in Providence Hall, Blue Room. Students are encouraged to come by and cheer on their favorite speaker or just watch students attempt to speak professionally on hilarious topics as they compete to win big prizes.

Dinner will be provided.

Student Voice Assembly set for Wednesday

SGA4The OLLU Student Government Association is holding the first Student Voice Assembly of the month on Wednesday from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in Providence Hall, Blue Room. The Student Voice Assembly is a meeting every two weeks that aims to keep open communication between students and student organization leaders. It also serves as a way for students to be involved with university administration, staff and faculty. The meetings are open to everyone, and all student concerns are welcome

Join HALO for ‘Break on Through’

BreakonThroughHigher Achievement through Leadership Opportunities (HALO) is hosting the event, “Break on Through,” Wednesday, from 4-6 p.m. in the Mabee Gymnasium. This workshop, featuring motivational speaker Troy Stende, will teach students how to stay on the right track during their college journey, as well as how to overcome the distractions and obstacles in their path. Stende will show students that all obstacles can be overcome if they focus on their goals. Students will be encouraged to break through their obstacles by literally breaking through boards with their own hands.
