The Sisters of the Congregation of Divine Providence will be having their annual “Trivia Night” fundraiser Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. in Chapel Auditorium. The cost is $10 per person to play, or $100 for a table of 10 players. All organizations and individuals are invited to play. Hamburgers, nachos, snacks and drinks will be available.

The OLLU Center for Mexican American Studies and Research and the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences are hosting a reading and book signing with author Beatriz De La Garza, Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7p.m. Providence Hall, West Social Room (PWSR).
De La Garza’s stories take place in Texas through various eras, and are often told through a feminine voice. De La Garza’s books include, “Pillars of Gold and Silver,” “A Law for the Lion: A Tale of Crime and Injustice in the Borderlands,” and “From the Republic of the Rio Grande: A Personal History.”
There will be a reception prior to the reading at 6 p.m. in the Main Building Renaissance Parlor.
Books will be available for purchase during the event. The event is free and open to the public.

The OLLU Staff Organization is selling tickets for its 2nd annual staff fundraiser on Oct. 26 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. They will be selling plates with chicken fajitas, sausage, rice and beans for $6, and soft drinks for $1. Tickets can be purchased in advance in the Assessment Center in Walter Center, Room G03.

OLLU mourns the loss of Sister Virginia Clare (VC) Duncan, CDP, PhD, former OLLU Professor of Education. Sister VC first came to Our Lady of the Lake College to earn her Bachelor of Arts in English. Later, while working on her doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin, she taught education courses at OLLU. She was a member of the OLLU faculty off and on from 1964 to 1983.
After leaving OLLU, Sister VC became director of Physical Facilities at the Convent, did pastoral work and teaching in Louisiana, and served as the first Director of Development for the Congregation of Divine Providence. She retired in 1996 after 56 years of religious service.
The Rosary is Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. and the Wake is at 6:30 p.m. A Memorial Service will be Thursday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. All services will be in Annunciation Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Convent Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Sisters of Divine Providence, 515 S.W. 24th Street, San Antonio, Texas 78207.
OLLU will host a reading as part of the event, “Letras en la Frontera,” Friday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. in Providence Hall, Blue Room. Twelve authors will read from selected works. The reading is part of the annual citywide literary event.

Experience the food and dancing of Puerto Rico, Friday, Sept. 13 from 7-9 p.m. at the International Folk Culture Center (IFCC).
A $5 donation is requested for the evening to help cover the food. Anyone who would like to help prepare the meal may eat for free. Dinner preparation will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday.
Dinner will be served from 7-8 p.m., and members of Ballet Folklorico Boriken will teach the dances of Puerto Rico.

The OLLU community is encouraged to join the naming contest for the University’s official newsletter (formerly e-Currents). OLLU students, faculty and staff can submit name suggestions for the newsletter until Thursday at 5 p.m. Final voting will begin Sept. 9. The winner, who will be announced on Sept. 16, will receive a Kindle Fire HD.
This newsletter is the new way that Our Lady of the Lake University will communicate with students, faculty and staff. It is replacing the e-Currents Online Newsletter that many in the OLLU community have been familiar with, but it needs a name, and that is where the OLLU community can help!
