Two students receive academic scholarships

OLLU students Naila Ramiro and Kevin Meraz have been selected to receive the Adelante/Ford Motor Company Future Leaders Scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Miller Brewing and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) established Adelante U.S. Education Leadership Fund, a nonprofit organization focused on breaking the trend of Hispanic non-graduates and furthering their educational future.

This scholarship is for college students of Hispanic descent who have completed at least 30 credit hours of college course work. To qualify, applicants must be majoring in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics).

Both recipients will receive $2000 this academic year.

OLLU employees encouraged to sign up for service day

OLLU faculty and staff are invited to participate in a service project as part of “OLLU Service Day,” Friday, Oct. 18 from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Seton Home. Those who wish to participate should sign up by Oct. 9.

Seton Home is a nonprofit that gives assistance to teenage mothers and their children. Participants will assist in or more of the following tasks: turning mulch in gardens and playgrounds, power washing sidewalks, painting part of a mural, assisting with the Angel Tree project, clean up, and light custodial work among other tasks.

OLLU Service Day is a University-approved initiative so employees do not need to submit vacation time in order to participate.

Employees who wish to participate should email Jennifer Bendele, director of the Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism at jbendele@ollusa.edu. Staff must obtain approval from their supervisor to participate.

Annual Blackboard Users Conference to take place this month

The Texas Blackboard Users Group annual conference will be held Oct. 24-25 at the Holiday Inn San Antonio International Airport.

The conference will offer various presentations including support, program director roundtables, and breakout sessions directly for faculty and instructional designers.

Keynote speakers will include

  • Maurice Heilblum, Senior Vice President, Higher Education, Corporate and Government Markets
  • Dr. Tim Chester, Vice President for Information Technology at University of Georgia
  • Dr. Belle Wheelan, President of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

OLLU community invited to support freshmen during ‘OLLU Connect’

Faculty, staff and student leaders are invited to attend “OLLU Connect,” a special event to support new freshmen at OLLU, Thursday from 12:20-1:15 p.m. in Chapel Auditorium.

During the event, faculty, staff and student leaders will send a symbolic message to freshmen that the University community is here for them, especially during their most challenging time.

Lunch will be provided during the event.

Reminders from University Police

Community urged to use crosswalks safely and observe all fire alarms

Crossing any street when the “Don’t Walk” signal is displayed is a state transportation code violation. The University community is urged to comply with all traffic laws at all times and use the crosswalks safely. To view the code, click here.

Also, when a fire alarm sounds in a building, all occupants are required to exit the building. Treat all fire alarms as real for the safety of the OLLU community.

OLLU community invited to reading by Beatriz de la Garza

Author Beatriz de la Garza will present a reading and book signing on campus Wednesday at 7p.m. Providence Hall, West Social Room (PWSR).

De La Garza’s stories take place in Texas through various eras and are often told through a feminine voice. De La Garza’s books include, “Pillars of Gold and Silver,” “A Law for the Lion: A Tale of Crime and Injustice in the Borderlands,” and “From the Republic of the Rio Grande: A Personal History.”

There will be a reception prior to the reading at 6 p.m. in the Main Building Renaissance Parlor. The event is sponsored by the OLLU Center for Mexican American Studies and Research and the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Books will be available for purchase during the event. The event is free and open to the public.

Staff Organization selling fundraiser tickets

The OLLU Staff Organization is selling tickets for its second annual staff fundraiser on Oct. 26 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Staff Org will be selling plates with chicken fajitas, sausage, rice and beans for $6 and soft drinks for $1. Tickets can be purchased in advance in the Assessment Center in Walter Center, Room G03.

OLLU community invited to attend CDP Heritage Day

The OLLU community is invited to attend CDP Heritage Day, Sunday, Oct. 13 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Moye Retreat Center in Castroville. There will be arts and crafts, children’s activities, a silent auction, a quilt raffle and much more during the event. Lle Paul will provide live entertainment.
