OLLU celebrates ‘Spirit Day: Hearts Ablaze with the Spirit’

The OLLU community participated in Spirit Day: Hearts Ablaze with the Spirit last Thursday. OLLU has been celebrating Spirit Day for 25 years. Spirit Day is based on the Western European tradition that dates from the Middle Ages when university communities would celebrate a special Mass to seek the spirit of wisdom at the beginning of an academic year. During Mass, OLLU honored 25 employees for their service to the University. A celebration of food, music, dancing and games took place after Mass in the Library Circle.

Faculty member presents during conference

HamidKhanHamid Khan, EDD, PE professor of management, presented the peer-reviewed article, “Examining Authentic Leadership Traits of the Successful CEO’s,” at the Academy of Business Research (ABR) Fall 2013 Conference held Sept. 18-20, in San Antonio. He also chaired two technical sessions of the conference on the themes of management and human resource management.

Women’s soccer defeats SAGU and No. 12-ranked Oklahoma City over the weekend

The women’s soccer team gathered a couple of nonconference wins over the weekend. One was against former Red River Athletic Conference member Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) – the Saints won 1-0 on Friday evening. The second game was against No. 12-ranked Oklahoma City University (OCU) by the score of 2-1 on Saturday evening. The wins improve the Saints’ record to 7-1-1 overall as they enter their conference schedule this week against the University of the Southwest on Thursday. SAGU – a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference – drops to 1-5, and OCU, also a member of the Sooner, drops to 4-3.  Read more online.

Cross-country teams compete in 4th Annual Ram Rumble in Fort Worth

After the cross-country team’s meet in New Summerfield, Texas, was cancelled due to weather conditions, the Saints took a traveling detour to Fort Worth, Texas, to participate in the Fourth Annual Ram Rumble at Texas Wesleyan University on Saturday. Fellow Red River Athletic Conference members the University of Texas at Brownsville and Langston University were also participating in the meet, so, according to Head Coach Stephen Sherman, “It was important for us to square off with them.” On the women’s side, OLLU, UTB and Langston represent the top three conference teams. Men’s soccer suffers first loss of season over the weekend

The men’s soccer team won one and lost one on the road this past weekend. On Friday, the Saints triumphed over former Red River Athletic Conference member Southwestern Assemblies of God University 3-1. On Saturday, OLLU suffered its first loss of the season to Oklahoma City University by the score of 5-2. The Saints are now 6-1 overall, while SAGU drops to 3-4 and OCU improves to 3-3.  Both SAGU and OCU are members of the Sooner Athletic Conference in the NAIA. Read more online.

OLLU’s Alexandra Wilborn named conference ‘Libero of the Week’

Alexandra Wilborn was named Red River Athletic Conference Co-Libero of the Week for the dates of Sept. 16-22. She shares the award with Diana Castaneda of Wiley College. Wilborn is the first Saint to be named “Libero of the Week” since 2010, when Sarah Lindsay received the honors twice that season. Wilborn, a freshman defensive specialist from San Antonio, collected 33 digs in the hard-fought loss to the University of St. Thomas and 18 in a defeat at the hands of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. She had just one receiving error in 28 attempts as OLLU slipped to 6-6 on the season. Sydney Herrera of OLLU was also nominated for Player Hitter of the Week, while Janelle Solis of OLLU was a Setter of the Week nominee. Read more online.

Luis Flores corralled the Red River Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week award for Sept. 9-15. Flores, a senior defender from Brownsville, Texas, spearheaded an effort that led to a pair of shutouts for the Saints last week. His leadership helped OLLU limit Concordia University (Texas) to only two shots on goal and prevented Howard Payne University (Texas) from taking a shot in a 2-0 difference. Teegan Luckemeyer stood out as the Red River Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 9-15, while her teammate, Victoria Vazquez, claimed the RRAC Defensive Player of the Week honor for the same dates. This is Vazquez’ third consecutive recognition as the conference’s Player of the Week. On Aug. 26-Sept. 1 and Sept. 2-9, she was named “Offensive Player of the Week.” Luckemeyer, a sophomore forward from New Braunfels, Texas, produced a pair of goals and one assist in a 2-0 week for the Saints. She posted a goal and an assist in a 3-2 victory over Concordia University (Texas) then booted in a goal to tag Northwood University with its first loss by a 4-3 score.
