Literary Festival celebrates freedom of speech and the press

OLLU’s annual Literary Festival, “Je Suis the Word/Yo soy palabra,” has started and will include a variety of events through April 11.

The next event will be “The Politics of Words” – A reading by Ellen Meeropol on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room.

The festival title gets its inspiration from the “Je Suis Charlie” slogan that was adopted by supporters of freedom of speech and freedom of the press after 12 people were killed in a shooting at the offices of the French satirical weekly newspaper, “Charlie Hebdo,” in Paris, France. The theme of this year’s festival is meant to be a statement of support against the oppression, repression, and suppression of freedom of speech and of literary texts.

Featured presenters for this year’s festival include Laura Van Prooyen, Wendy Barker, Ellen Meeropol, Shelia Black, Carol Coffee Reposa and Denise Chavez.
