OLLU begins the Christmas season with tree decorating, Las Posadas and Candlelight

The OLLU community is invited to kick-off the Christmas season tomorrow beginning with the decorating of the Christmas tree in the Mall Area from 12:30-1:30 p.m. The official lighting of the Christmas tree will take place at 6 p.m. in the Mall Area and will also include a special blessing and performance by the OLLU chorus.

Two longstanding traditions, Las Posadas and Candlelight, will also take place this week. Las Posadas celebration will take place Friday and Candlelight will take place Saturday evening.

The procession will begin at Annunciation Chapel, followed by a celebration and reception in Chapel Auditorium.

8:15 p.m. – Caroling in the Moye Rotunda

OLLU community invited to dissertation defenses

Several students in the Leadership Studies PhD program will be defending their dissertations throughout the next two weeks in preparation for commencement. The OLLU community is invited to attend the defenses. The schedule is as follows:

  • Dec. 1: James Phillip McNeely – “A study of the Differences between Normative GLOBE U.S. Leadership Preferences and Black American Catholics’ GLOBE Leadership Preferences,” at 11 a.m. in Main Building, Room 311B.
  • Dec. 3: Elizabeth Schlimmer – “A phenomenological study of residing at the Corpus Christy Ronald McDonald House,” at 1:30 p.m. in Moye Hall, Room 418.
  • Dec. 7: Gabriela I. Nunez – “A Narrative Inquiry of the Interpretations of Mexican-American Families that Experienced Separation due to U.S. Immigration Policies in the 21st Century,” at 10:30 a.m. Location to be determined.
  • Dec. 8: Elaine Dispo – “On the field and outside the lines: Relationships between student athletes’ perceptions of their intercollegiate coaches’ practices and student athletes’ self-reported satisfaction, athletic, and academic performance,” at 1 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room.

Today is last day to submit project requests to Marketing and Communications

To ensure that all projects for the end of the semester are completed in a timely manner, the last day to submit project requests to Marketing and Communications for the fall semester is today. This includes ecards, evites, event registration forms, programs, fliers and any other print or digital items.

CyberSaints take third place at ‘Cyber Panoply’

CyberSaintsTeamPhoto2015FLDespite bad weather and some technical difficulties, the CyberSaints, OLLU’s Cyber Security team, took third place at “Cyber Panoply,” a Network Security Competition held in late October.

Cyber Panoply (http://cyberpanoply.com) is a Network Security Competition where teams assess (hack) a network and also try to defend compromised machines. Teams attempt to get full control of a computer and place their “flag” on it to get points. Once a flag is set, the team must defend it from other competitors to accumulate more points.

OLLU team members are Xavier Perez, Taylor Beck, Francisco Hernandez, Yesenia Martinez, Sean Boyer, Gabriel Gozalo, Alfonso Luévano, Juan Hernandez and Daniel Corona.

Staff/faculty appreciation dinner set for Dec. 10

OLLU President Dr. Diane Melby, and the Administrative Council invite all faculty and staff to attend the faculty/staff appreciation dinner, Dec. 10 at 5:30 p.m. in Mabee Gymnasium.

Each faculty and staff member may bring one guest. Dress code is holiday attire and this event is for adults only.

It is imperative that every faculty or staff member RSVP, whether coming alone or bringing a guest, in order to determine the amount of food and drinks that need to be ordered. There is no cost to attend.

No. 7 women’s basketball wins home opener against No. 19 Lewis-Clark State


Womens Basketball_11-24-15The women’s basketball team opened its home schedule last Wednesday with a Thanksgiving Eve game against Lewis-Clark State College from Lewiston, Idaho. The Saints gave the Warriors their second loss in two days with a 79-63 win. The No. 19 NAIA team lost Nov. 24 to NCAA DII St. Mary’s University 59-74. The two losses for the Warriors are their first of the season after they went 7-0. The Saints improve to 2-2 on the season. Read full article online.

Provide feedback to the Board of Trustees on Campus Carry Legislation

The OLLU Board of Trustees is seeking input from the University community as it makes a decision regarding a recently passed Texas law about carrying concealed handguns on university campuses.

The OLLU community is strongly encouraged to share their thoughts by completing the survey. All members of the campus community should have received a link to the survey from the Marketing and Communications email box.

Surveys must be completed by Tuesday, Nov. 24, at midnight.
