Message from OLLU PD about Handicap Parking spaces on campus

Our Lady of the Lake University currently has more handicap/ADA spaces than is required by law. However, at various peak times there have been individuals who cannot find an available space.

Upon a close review over the last two weeks, it has been discovered a number of employees and students are using another individual’s vehicle or handicap placard to park in these spaces. This is considered an unauthorized use of these parking spaces and the vehicle is subject to being cited. It is a violation of state law to use the placard or plates for a disabled parking spot without the person with the disability in the vehicle (Texas Transportation Code Chapter 681).

Starting tomorrow, the Our Lady of the Lake University Police Department will begin issuing citations to any vehicle that is parked in a handicap/ADA space using an unauthorized plate or placard. The fine per citation is $500, and any Texas Peace Officer may confiscate the placard to return it to the originating department.

Upon a repeated infraction, an immobilization device (boot) will be placed on the vehicle in conjunction with another citation.

All are asked to ensure using a vehicle or placard (for handicap parking) that is assigned to the person driving the car.
