At San Antonio Youth Literacy’s (SAYL) 2016 Volunteer and Partner Luncheon, OLLU was recognized as SAYL’s University Partner of the Year.

OLLU students have been tutoring second graders who are behind their peers in reading since 2002. They have implemented a special curriculum with their Reading Buddies once a week to practice reading and vocabulary. As a result, the students in the SAYL Reading Buddy program have achieved an average increase of five reading levels on the Fountas and Pinnell scale.

An average of 30 students from OLLU work with SAYL each year, with a majority tutoring students at neighboring Rodriguez Elementary.
