mensbasketball-joejackson2-18MEN’S BASKETBALL

  • Men’s basketball defeated Huston-Tillotson University 106-81 in Austin earlier last week. Joe Jackson scored 25 points, while Dav’vin Hill keyed much of the Saints’ defensive pressure. He recorded four steals and six assists. On Saturday, the Saints traveled to Dallas to play Paul Quinn College, and the Saints won 87-79. Allen Wilcher posted 14 points and 12 rebounds.  The Saint are now 17-7 overall and 11-5 in conference.
  • Congratulations to Joe Jackson for being selected as the conference player of the week. He also advanced from the top 100 Small College Basketball Watch List of 2017 to the top 50 list. The top 25 list will be released on March 15.
  • The No. 25 ranked Saints face LSU-Shreveport, the No. 12 team in the nation, on Friday. Saturday, the men will battle LSU-Alexandria –the No. 1 team in the NAIA. The men lost to both teams earlier in the season.

  • Women’s basketball had a bit of a scare against Huston-Tillotson University as they trailed most of the game. The Saints came back in the fourth quarter scoring 31 points while limiting the Rams to 13. The Saints won 89-75 and were led by Alyssa Ward’s 27 points and Rachel Baity’s 18 rebounds. On Saturday, the women traveled to Dallas and defeated Paul Quinn College 72-65. The team was led by the nonstarters, in particular Fancy Patrick who scored a career high 23 points.
  • Friday, the women will face LSU-Shreveport, who has received votes in the NAIA poll, but is not ranked. The No. 16 Saints will then face unranked LSU-Alexandria. OLLU has an opportunity to clinch its fifth consecutive RRAC regular season championship and cut down the nets in Mabee Gymnasium.

WHITE OUT ALUMNI AND FAMILY NIGHT

The White Out Alumni and Family Night will begin at 5 p.m. in front of the UWAC. The Sigmas will be giving away hot dogs and burgers and the Alumni office will sponsor the Dos XX Party Bus (ID required). Alumni and immediate family members of current OLLU students will receive free admission to both games. While supplies last, 10th anniversary T-shirts will be given away at the women’s game, and exclusive White Out T-shirts will be given out at the men’s game. There will be a raffle for Spurs tickets during both games (must be present to win). Saturday will also be senior’s night, where the senior players from the women’s and men’s teams will be recognized.

BASEBALL

The Baseball team hosted St. Gregory’s University on last Friday and behind ace Jordan Hackett, the Saints won 9-3. They were led by the hot bat of Matt Beasley, who missed hitting for the cycle by one home run. He walked, hit a single, hit a double and hit a triple to go 4-4 as he drove in four RBIs. Joey Baker pitched two innings and picked up the save. The Saints lost the second and third games by close margins, 2-3 and 4-5. They will be in Fort Worth this weekend to play Texas Wesleyan University on Feb. 24-25.

  • The softball team swept the NCAA D3 Southwestern University Pirates in a doubleheader Saturday. The Saints crushed the Pirates to open the series 13-2 and then came back from a 5-0 deficit to win 9-5 to end the afternoon.
  • The Saints open their home schedule on Tuesday at 1 p.m. A blessing by Father Kevin Fausz will begin the festivities and the honorary first pitch will be thrown out by a member of the Alumni Association. Games will take place at 1 and 3 p.m.
  • softball-laurenguerraca2-17Congratulations to Lauren Guerra for being selected as the Red River Character Athlete of the Week. She was recognized for her excellent work in the classroom, in the community and on the field.
  • Congratulations to Taylor Doege for capturing the conference Player of the Week Award.

GOLF

The golf team completed two rounds and hold on to third place in the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) Claud Jacobs Collegiate Invitational at the Victoria Country Club. The B team is in a tie for sixth place. The competition continues today.
