San Antonio Youth Literacy (SAYL) recently recognized Lisa Castle, a graduate student in the Communication and Learning Disorders (CDIS) program, as the Volunteer of the Month for March 2017. Lisa was first introduced to SAYL through a service-learning experience as part of a CDIS course. Through her service with SAYL, Lisa works with second grade students who are reading below their appropriate grade level. She meets with them once a week to read books and do fun literacy activities. The goal of the SAYL Reading Buddy program is to get elementary students to read at level with their peers, which ultimately improves school success and lowers dropout rates.
