Update on new residence hall

Due to complications from Hurricane Harvey, there has been a delay to the move-in for the new residence hall. The contractor is working to have the residence buildings complete as soon as possible, but a new move-in date will not be scheduled at this time because there could be other unforeseen delays.

Additional information regarding the impact to students:

  • There will be regular updates and move-in will be scheduled as soon as there is a firm completion date.
  • Impacted students will receive a $750 credit to their accounts on Sept. 30 (or a refund if they do not have an account balance).
  • Impacted students also will receive a credit on their spring semester account balance equal to $25 a day for the days they continue to be displaced from the new hall (or a refund if they signed a semester lease due to a December graduation). The days counting toward the spring semester credit begin on Sept. 16, 2017.

Below are some of the complications from the hurricane that led to the delay:

  • Rains from Hurricane Harvey caused a shutdown of the construction site for about three days.
  • The plumbing subcontractor for the hall is based out of Houston; their warehouse was flooded during the hurricane.
  • There was already a shortage of construction workers in the San Antonio area; this problem will continue to grow as workers head to the Houston area to take construction jobs there as part of the recovery from the hurricane.
  • The gas shortage that occurred in San Antonio following the hurricane caused a slowdown on the construction site as gas was unavailable to fuel generators and other equipment.
  • Hurricane Irma that hit the east coast last week, which will likely pull more construction workers from the area.
