Reading with fall 2017 Visiting Writer Robert Rivard Wednesday

Robert Rivard, OLLU’s fall 2017 Visiting Writer, will hold a reading on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m., in Main Building, Room 311.

Rivard is the founder and director of the Rivard Report, a nonprofit, nonpartisan local news and information site that connects engaged citizens in San Antonio.

He got his start as a sports reporter at the Brownsville Herald in 1977, and went on to work as a news reporter at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and Dallas Times-Herald. Rivard spent five years covering civil wars in El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala, and events throughout Latin America, including the Falkland Islands War as the Central American correspondent for Newsweek magazine. He later served as Newsweek’s chief correspondent, overseeing the magazine’s 35 domestic and foreign bureaus. That gave him the opportunity to meet world leaders, witness the fall of the Berlin Wall and many other historic events as the Soviet Union dissolved in the late 1980s.

In 1989, he moved back to Texas and served as the deputy editor of the San Antonio Light until its closure in 1993, and as managing editor and then editor of the Express-News from 1993-2011.
