OLLU conducting emergency preparedness drill this week

OLLU will be conducting an emergency preparedness this week. Drills are designed to help the community know how to respond in the event of an emergency.

Communications will indicate that a drill is occurring. However, everyone is asked to follow the directions provided in order to practice proper procedures for an actual emergency. In addition, everyone should refer to the safety fliers posted in each classroom. These provide information on a variety of emergency situations.

Men’s Basketball ends its season in NAIA Quarterfinals after loss to William Penn

OLLU men’s basketball ended its season after falling 76-89 to William Penn University in the quarterfinals round of the 81st Annual NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship Saturday evening in Kansas City.

Head Coach Michael Poindexter commented, “Getting to the quarterfinals [round of eight] is an amazing accomplishment for this program, and I’m proud of these young men, especially the five seniors, because for three of them, this time last year, they were sitting at home watching the nationals instead of playing in them. They have set the bar for the returners and the future Saints going forward. William Penn is an amazing team. They are the No. 1 seed for a reason and it showed tonight. They can score in many different ways and they are a great rebounding team. We could never get control of the game even when we came back and tied it at 50. They won all the 50/50 balls, so it just didn’t bounce our way tonight. We have to take this game and the feeling of defeat and use it as fuel to get back here next year to finish the job.”

The Saints concluded the 2017-2018 season with a record of 23-12. Read full story here.

Softball wins one of three against LSU-Alexandria

The OLLU softball team won one of three games against LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) over spring break, 2-9, 4-1 and 1-2. The Saints move to 11-3 in the Red River Athletic Conference and 14-6 overall, while LSUA moves to 11-7 overall and 4-1 in conference. The Saints received 80 votes in the 2018 NAIA Softball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll No. 1 that was released March 13. It was the most votes the Saints have received since April 21, 2015, when they received 88 votes. The Saints have never been ranked in the Top 25 of the poll. The Generals started the season ranked 20th in the Poll but have since dropped out and received no votes in the latest poll. In addition, the Saints have been elevated to the top of the conference poll ahead of LSUA, Huston-Tillotson University, the University of Houston-Victoria, Langston University, Texas A&M University – Texarkana, the University of the Southwest, Jarvis Christian College and Texas College. The Saints play the third game against Huston-Tillotson University that was postponed earlier in the season on March 27 in Austin. They return home to host Jarvis Christian College March 29-30 in a Red River Athletic Conference three-game series. Read full story here.

Women’s basketball loses in overtime at NAIA National Championship to end their season

The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women’s basketball team got off to a slow start yet kept the game close throughout, but lost in overtime to Loyola University New Orleans (LUNO) 89-86. The Saints end their season with an overall 23-10 record, while the Wolf Pack (26-5) advances to the round of 16 in the 2018 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Championships presented by Wells Fargo.

Head Coach Christopher Minner commented, “We had a disappointing start, and that really hurt us. We missed four free throws at the end. We make one, and we win. We got a good stop, and then didn’t block out. It was a good game to watch, but we should have won. When we get out-rebounded by 17 and miss free throws and layups, we don’t win at the national tournament.” Read full story here.
