Incoming freshman earns $10,000 scholarship from MAUC, OLLU
Recent Memorial High School graduate Jasmine Huerta is headed to OLLU with a double scholarship award.
Huerta received a $5,000 Spirit of Education Scholarship Wednesday night from the Mexican American Unity Council (MAUC) at the nonprofit’s annual awards dinner. OLLU will match the amount, bringing Huerta’s award to $10,000.
“I will be able to get my bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a master’s in Social Work from my first choice for college,” Huerta said at the MAUC Center Community Room. “I want to return to my community (after college) and teach courses in middle school. I want to stand before my students and tell them that I faced the same struggles they have and that I overcame them. I want to be able to help children discover themselves.”
One of eight Class of 2018 Spirit of Education award recipients, Huerta won The Silvano and Nicolasa Garza Scholarship. Since 2005, MAUC has awarded more than $400,000 in scholarships to more than 50 students, some of whom have earned degrees from OLLU.
An accomplished student who excelled in Advanced Placement courses at Memorial, Huerta expressed gratitude for her scholarship.
“I hesitated to even apply,” she said. “I cannot express how grateful I am for this scholarship. Without it, I would still be worrying about how I would pay for college.”
