Saints earn five conference awards this week

Volleyball’s Elizabeth Olivarez, soccer’s Jesus Cortes, Erica Robertson and Erika Zapata and cross-country’s Derek Barnett and Sabrina Garcia earned selection as Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Players of the Week for their performance over the dates of Aug. 27-Sept. 2. This is the second set of conference awards for the 2018 volleyball season.

Olivarez contributed 51 digs as the Saints suffered an 0-3 setback on the road. She posted a high of 18 digs in a 3-1 loss to Georgetown College and added 17 against Southwestern Assembles of God University.

Cortes, offensive player of the week, scored three goals over the weekend, while taking nine shots, six on goal. He guided the Saints to wins against Oklahoma City University (OCU) and Texas Wesleyan University (TWU) as the Saints move to 3-0 on the season.

Robertson led her team to two wins over the weekend against OCU and TWU. She scored one goal on nine shots taken, five on goal. Teammate Erika Zapata’s defensive skills garnered her the weekly defensive award.

Barnett received his first runner of the week award this season after breaking the Saints all-time record in the 5k at the Alamo City Opener. His time of 16:11.9 bested his previous record-breaking time of 16:13.72 from 2015. On the women’s side, Garcia ran her first collegiate race and had an impressive showing. She placed fifth with a time of 19:56.8 in the 5k.
