PhD candidate to present research at international conference

Ray Martinez, OLLU PhD student and Blackboard administrator, will be presenting his doctoral research at the Academy of Business Research Conference being held in San Antonio this week. Martinez’s study, “Analyzing the Relationship Between Adolescent Family Structure, Leadership Virtues, and Life Satisfaction,” investigated the effects of a single and dual-guardian adolescent family structure on self-reported leadership virtues and satisfaction with life.

The Academy of Business Research (ABR) is an international society of scholars and practitioners who exchange ideas and collaborate in a conference setting. In the last decade, ABR has had participants from all 50 states and 49 different countries.

Sign up for fall 2018 Employee Service Day

OLLU faculty and staff are invited to participate in a service project as part of OLLU Employee Service Day on Nov. 7, from 9:15 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Our Lady of the Lake Convent.

During the service day, volunteers will assist the Sisters of Divine Providence with several projects at the Convent, including helping in the Peace and Bezner Gardens, cleaning the Stations of the Cross and helping in the nursing home. Afterwards, volunteers will join the Sisters for lunch.

OLLU Employee Service Day allows faculty and staff to take part in a community service project during working hours without using vacation leave time.

Employee Service Day is open to the first 15 employees who sign up. Staff must obtain approval from their supervisor before signing up. Just a reminder that employees can only participate once per calendar year.

Men’s cross-country finishes fifth in NAIA Mid-States Classic, women place ninth

The OLLU men’s and women’s cross-country teams participated in the 2018 NAIA Mid-States Classic, hosted by Southwestern College. The men’s team placed fifth. The women’s team placed ninth.

Head Coach Stephen Sherman commented, “Mid-States is one of my favorite meets I have been involved with, and today was amazing. The weather was spot on and the course ran fast. It’s always nice too to experience success at this meet, which both groups did today.”

Capturing the men’s event was Oklahoma City, followed by Columbia, Evangel and Southwestern Assemblies of God. Following OLLU were Benedictine, Doane, Park, MidAmerica Nazarene, St. Thomas, Southwestern, Missouri Valley, Kansas Wesleyan McPherson, Southern Nazarene, York, Bethany, Ottawa, Oklahoma Panhandle and Oklahoma Wesleyan. OLLU to host production of ‘Abrazos’ with focus on immigration issues

The Center for Women in Church and Society is collaborating with Teatro Farolito to present “Abrazos” Sunday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. in Thiry Auditorium.

“Abrazos” is a stage production adapted from the book of the same title by Rebecca Padilla that tells the story of the pain, strength and perseverance faced by men, women and children immigrants. Their stories of fleeing violence, extortion and even certain death, all in the struggle to ensure their survival and the survival of their children, shed light on the horrendous acts of crime that forced them to leave their motherlands.

This production is part of the “OLLU is Migration” series.

The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase.

Saints win one of four matches in Grand View Tournament

The volleyball team participated in the Grand View Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, last weekend and won one of four matches. On Friday, the Saints lost to MidAmerica Nazarene University 3-1 and Bellevue University 3-1. On Saturday, the Saints lost to the No. 2 team in the NAIA, Grand View University, 3-0, and they closed out the tournament with a 3-1 win against Cardinal Stritch University. The team is now 10-11 overall. OLLU will host Wiley College on Friday, when the Saints will honor seniors Mariza Cardenas and Divinity Gonzalez during Seniors’ Night.

Men’s soccer wins one of two over the weekend

The Saints hosted the University of the Southwest on Thursday and lost 3-0. On Saturday, they hosted Paul Quinn College, and the men won 5-0. Scoring the goals were Guillermo Serrano, Tristan Pettit, Adrian Delgado, Jose Barraza and Jesus Cortes. The Saints will play their last two home games of the season this week. On Thursday, they host the University of St. Thomas and on Saturday, they will play the University of Houston-Victoria. Before this game, they will honor 12 seniors, Jose Barraza, Adam Bieker, Matheus Campos, Jorge Cavazos, Jesus Cortes, Adrian Delgado, Jose Escareno, Nick Genthon, Joel Gonzalez, James Halpin, Noe Salinas and Homer Trevino.

Women’s soccer remains undefeated

The Saints remain undefeated after beating the University of the Southwest and Paul Quinn College last week. On Thursday, Dawson Brinkley set a season goal record to lead the Saints to a 4-0 win over Southwest. Brinkley recorded her fourth hat trick of the season and Jaylin Seto scored the other goal. On Saturday, scoring for the Saints were Dawson Brinkley, Baye Polansky (2) and Alyssa Riepel. The team will play their last home games of the season this week. On Thursday, the Saints will play the University of St. Thomas, and on Saturday, they will face the University of Houston-Victoria. Before this game, the team will honor seniors Brooke Cousins, Erica Robertson and Mako Tembo.
