OLLU men’s golf concludes Texas Intercollegiate with fifth-place finish
After a first-day, third-place finish, the men’s golf team concluded the 2019 Texas Intercollegiate in fourth place. The event, sponsored by Texas Wesleyan University (TXWES), was held at Hawks Creek Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday.
Head Coach Arnie Martinez commented, “Our guys did a great job of competing this week. Although we came up short this tournament, they continued to grind and put up a fight until it was over. There are a lot of things we did right. Our guys will build off of the positives. We will address what we need to work on and be better for our next event. This season is a marathon, not a race. I’m excited to see what this squad will do this year. Go, Saints!”
OLLU’s three-round total was 298-293-301/892. Kane Ybarra led the Saints with a 72-70-72/214 score. His 2-under-par finish was good enough for fifth place overall. Diego Garcia finished in 13th place with 73-71-74/218, followed by Raul Gutierrez with 73-76-74/223, Daniel Jones with 81-76-81/238 and Joshua Sturt with 80-82-81/243.
The Saints received 23 votes in the NAIA Men’s Golf Coaches’ Top 25 Poll released this fall. Their next event is slated for Sept. 22-24 at the Fall Invitational at Colony Creek Golf Club. It is being sponsored by the University of Houston-Victoria in Victoria, Texas.
