Volleyball opened 2021 season last week

The volleyball team will opened its 14th season last week.

Second-year Head Coach Scott Mattera addressed the change saying, “We framed the move to the spring as a positive. We had the fall to get to know each other, train together and get into a college life routine before we had to compete.”

On Jan. 22, the Saints opened their Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) schedule with a match against Jarvis Christian College, and the following day, the team hosted matches throughout the day. At 12 p.m., Jarved plays Wayland Baptist University, OLLU played Wayland, and OLLU played another conference match against Jarvis.

From Feb. 5-6, the Saints will participate in the New Orleans Tournament hosted by Xavier University of New Orleans. The schedule has OLLU playing the University of the Cumberlands at noon and Xavier University at 6 p.m. On Feb. 6, they will play Faulkner at 1 p.m.

The team will continue on Feb. 13 with a match against NCAA D2 Texas A&M University International in Laredo, Texas, followed by another match against a D2 school St. Mary’s University at 6 p.m. on its campus in San Antonio.

OLLU will travel to Hawkins, Texas, for a conference match against Jarvis on Feb. 19 at 6 p.m.

From March 5-6, the Saints will play nonconference matches. On March 5, the Saints will be in Longview, Texas, for a 6 p.m. match against NCAA D3 LeTourneau University. On March 6, the Saints will travel to Forth Worth, Texas, for a match against NAIA Texas Wesleyan University at 2 p.m.

The Saints return home for three conference matches against the University of the Southwest March 12-13 and 20. The first match is at 7 p.m. on March 12, noon on March 13 and 2 p.m. on March 20.

OLLU will then prepare to host the RRAC Championship Tournament on March 26 and on March 27 for the championship match. Times and opponents will be determined.

The team will close out its regular season on April 2-3 in Plainview, Texas, for matches against Wayland and Oklahoma City University. Times will be announced.

The NAIA has scheduled April 17 through April 27 as the volleyball national championship dates for the 2020-2021 season.
