Baseball opens season against Central Methodist University

The baseball team lost a four-game series against Central Methodist University (CMU) this weekend and start the season 0-4 overall.

Game One

The Saints led 4-1 after three innings with doubles from Tyler Vivier (FR/San Antonio, Texas) and Robert Lopez (SR/San Antonio, Texas). The Eagles cut the lead to one in the top of the fourth inning with a Logan McDonald single. CMU tied the game one inning later and scored one run in the top of the seventh to win 5-4. Alec Martinez (JR/Corpus Christi, Texas), Adrian Gonzalez Jr. (JR/Weslaco, Texas) and Devin Benavides (FR/Laredo, Texas) each gave up one run for the Saints. Benavidez pitched 1.2 innings and recorded three strikeouts.

Game Two

The second game of the series was dominated by the Eagles. They tallied 12 runs on 14 hits. Ram Maldonado (JR/McAllen, Texas) was the starting pitcher for the Saints and gave up six earned runs. The Saints also used Pablo Montante (SO/San Antonio, Texas), John B. Ortega II (FR/Harlingen, Texas), Hamilkar Medina (JR/Carolina, Puerto Rico) and Alex Garza (JR/Cypress, Texas) as pitchers. OLLU left eight runners on base and had six hits. The Eagles won 12-0 to take a 2-0 series lead heading into Saturday.

Game Three

The Saints were shutout for the second game in a row to start Saturday’s doubleheader. CMU scored 11 runs on 12 hits and recorded nine RBIs. The Saints were limited to hits by Jacob Montejano (SO/San Antonio, Texas), Lopez and Vivier. Starting pitcher Jose Ramirez III (JR/Donna, Texas) allowed three earned runs. Triston Scherer (JR/Crosby, Texas) also gave up three runs and Brett Vasquez (SO/Mont Belvieu, Texas) allowed five. Mason Schwellenbach started at the mound for the Eagles and only allowed three hits in five innings of work. The Eagles ended up winning 11-0.

Game Four

The final game of the series was full of offensive power. CMU scored seven runs in the top of the first inning and the Saints fought back in the bottom of the frame with four of their own. Jose Diaz (SR/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) homered to center and Montejano drove in two runs. Vivier singled to score the fourth run of the inning. The Eagles continued to boast their powerful bats and scored five runs in the top of the second inning. They won 20-8 to complete the series sweep. Vivier totaled four RBIs and Jose Diaz tallied three hits.
