Softball takes one of three against Texas A&M University-Texarkana

The softball team won one of three games against Texas A&M University-Texarkana (TAMUT) this weekend. The Saints are now 9-12 overall and 1-2 in Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play.

Game one

The Eagles struck first in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run from Jade Martin. The Saints responded in the bottom of the inning when Deandra Vera (SO/Uvalde, Texas) scored on the fielder’s obstruction. The game remained tied until the top of the sixth inning. Texarkana scored two runs, one on a wild throw and the other on a single by Laura Dyer. The Eagles held on to win 3-1 and take a 1-0 series lead. Starting pitcher Angela Ramirez (JR/Converse, Texas) allowed two runs and tallied seven strikeouts. Kaili Luna (FR/Converse, Texas) batted 2-for-3 at the plate.

Game two

The Saints struggled in the second game of the series. Eagles starting pitcher Anna Westberry pitched a complete game and struck out seven batters. She allowed five hits and one earned run. Texarkana’s offense exploded for eight runs and 10 hits. Madison Nunn (JR/Cibolo, Texas) batted 2-for-3, including one RBI. Kennah Kennedy (SR/Frost, Texas) set the Saints all-time stolen bases record with 27 when she stole second base in the sixth inning. The Saints fell 8-1 and headed into Sunday down 2-0 in the series. Despite the game loss, Ciera Martinez struck out 11.

Game three

Martinez pitched a gem in the series finale. She struck out 12 batters and allowed only two hits on 109 pitches. Nunn tripled to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning to score Kennedy and Jennifer Estrada (JR/El Paso, Texas). OLLU held on to win 2-0 and secure the last game of the series. Six different Saints hitters recorded at least one hit.
