Thirteen current, future OLLU students named Raise Your Hand Texas Scholars

Eight OLLU students, four incoming freshmen and one community college transfer have been named Raise Your Hand Texas Scholars.

The Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers – one component of the Raising Texas Teachers initiative – is designed to encourage the best and brightest students to consider a future in the teaching profession. Scholars receive up to $8,000 in annual funding for up to four years, as well as ongoing professional development opportunities, mentorship from public school educators and participation in a statewide aspiring teachers network facilitated by the Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation. 

In 2020 and 2019, 12 students were selected as Raise Your Hand Texas Scholars, and six were selected in 2018.

This year’s OLLU scholars are: Laurynn Cano, junior; Sandra Cherucheril, senior; Andreas Cortez, senior; Analisa Fernandez, freshman; Sandra Gonzalez, sophomore; Jose Guardioloa, senior; Sasha Smith, junior; and Miztica Vasquez, senior.

Incoming freshmen scholars are: Hailey Faz; Losbara Fleites; Alexandra Trevino; and Casie Ziegler-Bellinger. 

The transferring community college scholar is Elizabeth Rodriguez.
