Students complete summer practicums, capstone presentations
Two students recently completed their summer practicums and Biliterate Certificate Program (BCP) capstone presentations.
Valeria López-Sánchez, a Criminology and Criminal Justice (CRIJ) Major with a Biliterate Certificate, delivered her final BCP Capstone Presentation virtually on Aug. 5., after completing her CRIJ Internship in two Spanish-speaking environments in Austin, Texas. López-Sánchez served at “Grace Divinity” and “Umbrella Security Services.” Scheduled to graduate in December, she plans to pursue a career with the U.S. Border Patrol, and eventually, hopes to become a detective with the FBI.
Irania Acosta, a Communication Sciences and Disorders major with a Biliterate Certificate, completed her BCP Practicum at the City of San Antonio Normoyle Center for Older Adults. She worked closely with older adults and children who participated in the Center’s Youth Program. Acosta completed her final research paper and delivered her final Capstone oral presentation in person on July 30. She competes on the OLLU women’s soccer team and is scheduled to graduate in May 2024.
López-Sánchez and Acosta worked with Maribel Lárraga, PhD, Professor of Spanish and Chair, who supervised both Capstone projects. Dr. Lárraga collaborated with Jiletta Kubena, PhD, Professor of Criminology, who served as academic adviser for López-Sánchez. Dr. Lárraga also collaborated with Stefanie Becerril, PhD, Associate Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders, who served as academic adviser for Acosta.
Both Acosta and López-Sánchez presented to an audience of faculty, staff and students.
Securing practicum opportunities for BCP students with the City of San Antonio is possible, thanks to the support of OLLU’s Center for Service Learning & Volunteerism.
