Cross-country and Holy Cross High School hosted Westside Classic

The cross-country programs competed in the Westside Classic hosted by OLLU and Holy Cross High School at Pearsall Park in San Antonio on Saturday. OLLU and Holy Cross entered a partnership this summer, marking the first time the two schools will collaborate on an athletic event. Holy Cross is located less than a mile from the OLLU campus; the university offers the Holy Cross Dual Credit Program that enables students to take college-level courses while earning credit for both institutions.

Schools participating in the meet included NCAA D1 University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, NCAA D3 the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, NCAA D3 Schreiner University, NCAA D2 Texas A&M University-Kingsville, NCAA D2 Texas A&M International University, NCAA D2 St. Edwards University, and NCAA D3 Texas Lutheran University. The men’s 8k starts at 8 a.m., and the women’s 6k follows at 8:45 a.m. Local high schools will also compete at the Westside Classic in separate events.

Head Coach Patrick Torres commented, “I’m extremely excited to fulfill the vision for Pearsall Park as a cross-country venue for the city of San Antonio’s cross-country teams. It’s always exciting to get a home meet, and I’d love to start a tradition and a home course for our program here at OLLU.”

Both teams finished in fourth place at the meet. Julio Sanchez was the men’s 8k top finisher for the Saints with a time of 28:13 for 16th place out of 70 runners. Nadia Sifuentes was the women’s 6k top finisher for the Saints with a time of 24:23 for fourth place out of 65 runners.
