Women’s basketball loses to Culver-Stockton in final Halo Classic game

The Saints women’s basketball team closed out the 2021 OLLU Halo Classic with a 60-65 loss to Culver-Stockton College (CSC). The Saints move to 2-8 overall while the Wildcats improve to 6-1.


The Saints are 1-1 against CSC. In 2017, the Saints defeated the Wildcats 94-70.


The first points of the game were scored after two minutes when Aaliyah Ortiz made a shot. Natalia Trevino (JR/Laredo, Texas) answered with a layup, and the score stayed at 2-2 for more than a minute. The Saints took a 6-4 lead, and the Wildcats went on an 8-2 run to end the first quarter leading 12-8.

The Saints bounced back in the second after CSC increased their lead to 18-11. Cormia Lewis (SO/Houston, Texas) sank a pair of threes to get to within one point of the Wildcats. A three from Keviona Barber (SR/Chicago, Ill.) gave the Saints their first lead at 22-20 at the two-minute mark. Madelyn Soto (FR/San Antonio, Texas)’s jumper ended the half giving the Saints the 24-23 lead.

The third quarter looked promising for the Saints as Barber connected on a three to take the 27-25 lead. Tiffany Lopez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) made her shot to give the Saints the 29-25 lead. A pair of made shots switched the momentum back to the Wildcats at 30-29. The score stayed close, but the Wildcats prevailed to lead 40-36 at the end of the third period.

The Wildcats began to pull ahead in the final period as they took a seven-point lead after one minute. With the score at 55-46, the Wildcats made a layup and was followed by a three from Trevino. A three from CSC was followed by another Trevino three, but the Saints still trailed by eight at 52-60. The threes were showcased for the Saints after Trevino’s were immediately followed by one each from Villegas and Barber. Barber’s free throws got the Saints to within two at 60-62 with 23 seconds left in the game. The Wildcats scored the final points on free throws to give them the 65-60 win.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Cormia Lewis led the Saints with 17 points as she connected on 6-of-8 from the field, three three-pointers and two free throws. Barber scored 14 points, and Trevino added 12. Emiko Hemphill (SR/San Antonio, Texas) recorded nine rebounds, while Barber had four assists and Trevino had three steals.

CSC’s Kaysie Newson scored 14 points for her team. Ortiz led in rebounds with nine, while Newson added three steals.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 22-of-57 shooting for 38.6 percent, 10-of-29 from three-point range for 34.5 percent and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line for 66.7 percent. CSC shot 23-of-55 for 41.8 percent, 6-of-7 three-pointers for 35.3 percent and 13-of-18 from the free-throw line for 72.2 percent.

The Saints grabbed 36 rebounds while the Wildcats collected 35. OLLU forced 14 turnovers and committed 14.
