Explosive offense leads Men’s basketball to win over NAU
The men’s basketball team downed North American University (NAU) 119-75 on Saturday. The Saints are now 5-5 overall while the Stallions drop to 3-11.
This was the first regular season matchup between the two schools.
The Saints hit on all cylinders to break their five-game losing streak. The Stallions took an early 5-1 lead, but the Saints tied the game and never looked back. They shot 60 percent from the field in the first half and led by as many as 27 points. OLLU led 68-43 at halftime and had three players in double-digit scoring. The Saints forced 10 turnovers in the first frame.
OLLU poured on the points in the second half. Five Saints players finished with double-digit scoring and the team totaled 52 rebounds. Ruben Monzon (SR/San Diego, Calif.) shined with 21 points and shot 9-of-11 from the field. The Saints largest lead was 47 points and 119 total points was the most scored in a single game since December of 2019.
Monzon led the team with 21 points, followed by Joseph Anderson (SR/Houston, Texas) with 18. Three Saints players tallied five rebounds each. Ellis Jones (JR/Houston, Texas) led the Saints with three assists.
NAU was led by McKinley Harris with 19 points. Bishop Ozan led the team with five rebounds. Ozan also contributed a team high four assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 44-of-78 shooting for 56.4 percent, 8-of-19 from three-point range for 42.1 percent and 23-of-28 from the free-throw line for 82.1 percent.
NAU combined for 19-of-53 from the field for 35.8 percent, 12-of-27 three-pointers for 44.4 percent and 25-of-37 from the charity stripe for 67.6 percent.
The Saints grabbed 52 rebounds while the Stallions gathered 24. OLLU forced 19 turnovers and committed 14.
The Saints play at Lamar University tomorrow in an exhibition game at 3 p.m.
