Men’s Basketball fights off Jarvis in thrilling 82-79 victory
The men’s basketball team fought off a comeback attempt by Jarvis Christian University (JCU) to win 82-79 on Saturday. The Saints improve to 13-9 overall and 8-6 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Bulldogs fall to 6-12 overall and 4-10 in RRAC competition.
The Saints were 18-6 against the Bulldogs prior to the game.
Both teams played well on the offensive side in the first half. The Saints shot 59.3 percent from the field and hit 9-of-11 free throws. Ruben Monzon and Tommie Law both had double-digit points at the break. The Bulldogs went 48.5 percent from the field and forced seven turnovers by the Saints. OLLU took a three-point lead into the locker room.
The Saints never trailed in the second half. OLLU led by four points with under two minutes remaining when the Bulldogs started climbing back. Joseph Anderson made a layup for the Bulldogs with eight seconds remaining to cut the Saints lead to three points. Rob Gil turned the ball over following the Bulldogs possession, but Jarvis was unable to hit the buzzer beating three-point attempt. The Saints have won three of their previous four games.
Monzon led the Saints with 24 points. Law grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Gil and Georges Darwiche had four assists each.
Andrew Holifield led Jarvis with 18 points. Keyshun Bradley grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Jakari Jackson finished with three assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 29-of-56 shooting for 51.8 percent, 7-of-24 from three-point range for 29.2 percent and 17-of-25 from the free-throw line for 68 percent. Jarvis shot 27-of-60 for 45 percent, 5-of-19 three pointers for 26.3 percent and 20-of-25 from the free-throw line for 80 percent.
The Saints grabbed 32 rebounds while Jarvis collected 29.
The Saints head to New Orleans to face Xavier University of Louisiana on Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
