Baseball wins conference series over UHV
The baseball team took two-of-three games against the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) this weekend. The Saints move to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play. The Jaguars are 6-9 overall and 1-2 in the RRAC.
Head Coach Matt Piker said, “It was good to start the conference schedule with a series win. We dropped a tough game two, but I was really proud with how the team bounced back in game three. We showed a lot of fight in the series finale and played our brand of baseball. It was a good weekend overall and we have a lot of work to do, but I’m proud with how we competed. Our assistant coaches did a great job this weekend.”
The Saints won the first game of the series by putting up runs late in the game. The contest was scoreless until the top of the eighth inning. Jackson Kalisky singled to left field to bring in Caimyn Holiday and Jacob Montejano. The Saints added two more runs in the ninth inning. Tyler Vivier singled to score Jonathan LaCourse and Kalisky also followed with a single to bring in Criztian Delgado. The Jaguars hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback. The Saints won 4-2 backed by eight hits. Joshua Mendez had a fantastic start on the mound. He went 8.2 innings with 10 strikeouts and allowed only two hits. Chase Dunn pitched in relief to one batter after Mendez gave up the two-run home run. Mendez had a no-hitter brewing until the seventh inning and earned the win.
