Contacts for OLLU community to submit prayer requests

Faculty, staff, and students who would like the OLLU community to pray for them or their family members can send prayer requests to Friar Bryan Hajovsky, director of University Ministry, at bbhajovsky@ollusa.edu, or Sister Patti Lohre, University Minister, at pmlohre@ollusa.edu.

Prayer requests include the following:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Sickness
  • Injury
  • Medical conditions/operations of faculty, staff, students or loved ones

Prayer requests will usually be sent out within 24 hours. When sending a prayer request, the following information can be included:

  • Name
  • Relationship of loved one to staff, faculty or student
  • Reason for prayer request

If prayer request is for death in the family, the following information may be included:

  • Date, time and location of memorial services or funeral arrangements

Presidential addresses posted online

Public addresses and opinion pieces that have been penned by OLLU President Dr. Diane E. Melby can be found on the OLLU website. The newest additions include an OpEd piece that was published in the San Antonio Express-News on the need for a better understanding of Title IX among colleges and universities, and Dr. Melby’s speech from the 2016 staff and faculty convocation on Aug. 23.

Faculty benefits fair to take place Aug. 31

There will be an Employee Benefits Fair for full-time faculty on Wednesday from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room.

Annual benefits enrollment provides benefit-eligible employees the opportunity to start, change or end benefits, which become effective Oct. 1, 2016, with the exception of medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, which begin Sept. 1, 2016.

This year, all employees can complete the enrollment online. Faculty needing assistance with online enrollment can sign up for a training session on Sept. 1 and Sept. 6 from 12-1 p.m. in St. Martin Hall, Annex D. Call 210-431-2344 to sign up for a training session.

Online access for full-time faculty will begin Aug. 31. The enrollment deadline is Sept. 7 by 11:59 p.m.

Tennis standout Mathias Rocha spent summer helping impoverished children of Brazil

Tennis-MathiasRochaReturning home to Brazil for the summer did not mean Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) tennis standout Mathias Rocha was going to rest. He seized an opportunity to represent his team of impoverished children in the area. Rocha, a junior on the Saints squad, volunteered at Canoas, a city close to his hometown of Porto Alegre. The First Serve Social Project, Projeto Primeiro Saque, gives children the opportunity to play tennis, and Rocha volunteered from June through August. “I got involved in this project because the head organizer is my friend. He used to be my tennis coach on the team I played for my whole life in Porto Alegre. Matheus Triska opened a tennis academy in Canoas, and in 2014, he began the project.” Rocha has been a River Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete both seasons he’s been at OLLU. Brooke Cousins leads soccer women to an 11-0 win over Bacone

WomensSoccer-Brooke-Cousins8-27-161Women’s soccer recorded its largest margin of victory after defeating Bacone College 11-0. The Saints are 2-0, while Bacone moves to 1-1. Brooke Cousins led the Saints in scoring with five goals and in shooting with 11 shots, seven on goal. Her five goals is a new Saints’ record for most goals scored in a single game. Men’s soccer crushes Texas A&M-Texarkana in conference opener

 MensSoccer-AdrianCordova8-26-16The men’s soccer team opened its conference schedule with a crushing 6-0 win over new Red River Athletic Conference member Texas A&M University – Texarkana. Marco Perales started the scoring frenzy in the 29th minute on a kick in. Four minutes before the end of the first half, Nickolas Tyrpak shot one in to give the Saints the 2-0 lead. Seven minutes into the second half, Perales shot in his second goal, and Jonathan Garay added another one at the 62nd minute. Saints’ newcomer Oscar Cordova scored his first goal at the 64th minute to give the Saints the 5-0 lead. He scored his second goal with 10 minutes left in the game. Read full story online.

2016-2017 University Convocation tomorrow

The 2016-2017 University Convocation for faculty and staff will take place tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in Thiry Auditorium. Convocation will kick off the 2016-2017 academic year and will include President Diane E. Melby, staff, faculty and members of the Board of Trustees. Its focus will include the State of the University, the Strategic Initiatives and a celebration of our community. Lunch will be provided following convocation in Chapel Auditorium.

Selrico regular hours to begin Aug. 27

Selrico Dining Services will resume its regular operating hours on Saturday. ID cards for students should be activated for meal plan use on Friday. Sister Annie B’s Cafeteria will still close at 2 p.m. on Friday.
