Softball makes history after winning Red River Athletic Conference Championship Tournament

Softball TournamentAfter missing the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament last year, the OLLU softball team came back this year with an unmatched determination to capture its first-ever Red River Athletic Conference Regular Season and Championship Tournament crowns. The Saints were named the conference’s best after dismantling Langston University 10-1 in five innings on Saturday. The Saints shut out the Lady Lions 8-0 in six innings to start the tournament on Friday and then went on to blank the Bacone Warriors 4-0 to close out the competitions on Friday.

With the win, the Saints have qualified for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Softball National Championship Opening Round. The bracket and pairings for the 40-team softball national championship opening round tournament will be announced at 7 p.m. CDT on May 6. The softball opening rounds will be contested from May 12-14 at 10 various sites with four teams playing in a double-elimination format at each location. After the opening rounds, the qualifying teams will move on to play May 23-29 at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus, Georgia.

Late on Friday, the conference announced the All-Conference Team and individual award-winners. OLLU’s Tommy Xu named to all-conference team in RRAC Golf Tournament

GolfOLLU hosted and the City of Live Oak, Texas presented the Red River and Unaffiliated Conference Men’s Golf Championship Tournament in Universal City last week. The tournament took place at the Olympia Hills Golf Course. Participating schools included: Our Lady of the Lake University, University of Texas at Brownsville, University of St. Thomas (Houston). Talladega College (Talladega, Ala.), Arizona Christian University (Phoenix) and Biola University (La Mirada, Calif.). The University of St. Thomas was the winning school with a three-round score of 938 (303, 302, 333). OLLU finished in fifth place with a score of 1032 (336, 344, 352). OLLU community invited to retirement celebrations for Professor Ahlberg, Dr. Swiger and Theresa Zertuche

The OLLU community is invited to attend a retirement celebration for Ted Ahlberg, assistant professor of Computer Information Systems and Security (CISS) and John Swiger, PhD, professor of Finance, Tuesday from 12-2 p.m. in Main Building, Room 311.

On Wednesday, the Communications Disorders department will be hosting a retirement celebration for Theresa Zertuche, office manager for the Harry Jersig Center, from 12-2 p.m. in the Library Community Room. Zertuche is retiring after 38 years of service to OLLU.

Message to all Stromberg users

An upgrade of the Stromberg time keeping system will occur Wednesday at 8 a.m. The time clocks should have no interruption in the recording of time while the internal system is being serviced, but users are asked to notify the Payroll Office if they experience any unusual changes during the upgrade. A notification will be sent when the upgrade is complete.

Seed Grant winners announced

Faculty members participated in the OLLU Seed Grant Program to help them become more competitive in securing external grant funding for academic projects and programs. The winners for the 2014 Seed Grant Program are Renelinda Arana Bressler, PhD, assistant professor of Sociology, Robbie Kouri, MS, associate professor of Physical Science and Peggy Carnahan, director of the Center for Science and Math Education. Each winner will receive $2,500 for use in preparation of proposals for federal grants.

Softball sweeps Bacone to capture its first-ever Red River Athletic Conference regular season title

SoftballConferenceChampions The softball team made history Saturday after capturing its first-ever regular season conference title. The Saints swept Bacone College on Friday 7-0 and 3-2, and on Saturday, 13-4 and 3-1 to win the Red River Athletic Conference. The Saints end the conference with an 18-2 record and are at 36-10-1 overall as they prepare for the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed. Before the games on Saturday, the Saints paid homage to three-year seniors Amanda Hinojosa and Ashley Perez, and four-year seniors Julie Ramos and Kimberlee Briseno.

The Saints will head out to Farmers Branch, Texas (near Fort Worth) on Thursday to prepare for the conference tournament that OLLU is hosting. On Friday, May 2, game one will be between No. 1 seed Saints and No. 4 seed Langston at 11 a.m. Game two will be between No. 2 seed Southwest and No. 3 seed Bacone at 1:30 p.m. At 4 p.m., game three will be between the losers of game one and game two. The final game will be at 6:30 p.m. between the winners of game one and game two.

On Saturday, game five will be between the loser of game four and the winner of game three at 10 a.m. The championship game will take place at 12:30 p.m., and if necessary a second championship game will take place at 3 p.m. OLLU will provide live stats for all games. OLLU track & field sweeps distance races in conference meet

Track and Field 2 OLLU captured all the distance races in the Red River Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at John Marshall High School in Langston, Okla. Langston University’s women won its second consecutive overall title. Ceara O’Donnell won the 1,500 and 3,000 meter races. Erica Ramos won titles in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races. Nicholas Chapa placed third in the Men’s 1,500 meters and in the 3,000 meters. Next season, the Saints will feature a full track & field team for both men and women. Read full story online.
