OLLU women’s soccer stuns No. 15-ranked Brownsville with 1-0 win

The women’s soccer team stunned the No. 15 team in the NAIA University of Texas at Brownsville by a score of 1-0 last Thursday. The win keeps the Saints undefeated in the Red River Athletic Conference with a 4-0 record and 12-1-1 overall. Brownsville, which previously was tied with the Saints for first place, has dropped to third place with a 3-1 conference and 8-3 overall record. Huston-Tillotson University (3-0-1/4-4-2) is ½ a game behind the No. 1 Saints. OLLU keeper freshman Gabriela Lopez recorded four saves, while Brownsville’s starting keeper Maria Eriksen recorded one and allowed the one goal. Boxing legend Jesse James Leija helps OLLU men’s basketball close out preseason

The men’s basketball finished its preseason Oct. 4, with a boxing session held by San Antonio boxing legend Jesse James Leija at his ChampionFit Gym. This was the fifth time that the men’s basketball team ended its preseason at Leija’s gym located on San Pedro Avenue in San Antonio. Head Coach Russell Vanlandingham started the tradition five years ago, when he was introduced to Leija by Roy Terracina, chairman of the Board of Trustees of OLLU. Terracina himself has been working out with the two-time world boxing champ for more than 20 years. Terracina worked out alongside the players Friday morning. Vanlandingham hopes that the workout can make his team tougher and play with a different mentality. “Boxing makes you develop a mentality and toughness that we could use,” explained Vanlandingham, “It is also important for the guys to meet a guy like the champ who got the most out of his abilities.” Read more online.

Tennis team to hold tryouts

The Saints women’s tennis team is looking for new players this season. Anyone interested in trying out for the team must have played at least two years of high school tennis or the equivalent of USTA tennis tournament experience. Community invited to attend open forum on the University’s Mission and Core Values

Continuation of dialogue started in spring semester

The campus community is invited to participate in a community forum on Oct. 11 to dialogue on the University’s mission and core values. The forum will take place in Chapel Auditorium from 1-4 p.m. and refreshments will be served. The forum is a continuation of the events held during the spring semester and earlier in the fall semester. Those who were unable to attend a previous forum are strongly encouraged to attend on Friday. Supervisors should work with employees to allow time to attend the forum.

Those interested in attending should RSVP at www.ollusa.edu/CommunityForum. OLLU seeks to fully express its mission and core values in our daily activities. This is an exciting point in OLLU’s history where, with student, staff, and faculty involvement, the University can expand its capacity to continually transform itself through collaborative thinking, interaction, creativity, and the ability to learn from each other. OLLU’s Forums on Core Values in our Collaboration will generate dialogue on the potential to transform the way it serves its mission. CDIS department hosting ‘Woolfolk Professional Development Conference’

The Communication Disorders program at OLLU is hosting the Woolfolk Professional Development Conference Oct. 12 in Providence Hall, West Social Room.

The conference will feature presenters, Dr. Don Hodges, the Covington Distinguished Professor of Music Education and Director of the Music Research Institute at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and John Nix, associate professor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

During the conference, participants will explore general principles of brain anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on language and music. They will also learn practical applications for music therapy in speech-language pathology. Additionally, participants will draw from voice physiology, acoustics, exercise physiology and motor learning to structure therapy sessions and individual training.

Join the Congregation of Divine Providence during the ‘Feast of the Holy Rosary Procession’

There will be a Feast of the Holy Rosary Procession on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. for Eucharistic prayer for world peace. Participants will gather at Mary’s statue in front of Main Building and join in a procession to Sacred Heart Chapel.

CyberSaints take second place at ‘Panopoly’

The CyberSaints, OLLU’s Cyber Security team, competed at “Panoply,” a Network Security Competition, over the weekend. One of OLLU’s teams took second place out of 12 teams. During the contest, teams competed to “hack” and gain control of computer systems and defend them from other attacking teams.

OLLU team members are Artair Burnett, Earl Lynn Tipton, John Brown, Manuel Luzunaris, Kevin Casteneda, Xavier Perez, Zachary Adams and Nathan Fabela.

Counseling Services helping students manage test anxiety

OLLU Counseling Services is hosting the event, “Managing Test Anxiety,” on Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. in the Providence Hall, Blue Room. The event will include a group discussion to help students learn ways to manage test anxiety.
