Five OLLU teams earn NAIA Scholar-Team recognition

Five teams from OLLU have been included in the NAIA Scholar-Team list for the 2016-2017 academic year. Men’s golf and tennis, and women’s soccer, softball and volleyball all earned NAIA Scholar-Team recognition this year. Women’s soccer led the way with an overall 3.34 GPA, followed by golf with a GPA of 3.11. Softball earned a 3.08, while both men’s tennis and volleyball tallied a 3.01 GPA. Last season, women’s soccer, softball, golf and volleyball earned Scholar-Team recognition. In 2014-2015, OLLU’s Scholar-Teams included women’s soccer, cross-country, softball and track and field, as well as men’s golf.

Leslie Cooper selected as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete in women’s tennis

2014LeslieCooper-wwThe National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced that 101 Women’s Tennis student-athletes have been named 2014 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. OLLU’s Leslie Cooper has been selected. In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved junior academic status. Cooper, a native of San Antonio and graduate of Holmes High School, received her degree in early childhood education from OLLU earlier this month. Read full article online.

OLLU women’s tennis signs Haley Darbonne from Cypress Lakes

Haley-TennisThe women’s tennis team has announced the signing of Haley Darbonne to its 2014-2015 squad. Darbonne attends Cypress Lakes High School in Cypress Lakes, Texas. At Cypress Lakes, Darbonne was the team’s No. 1 girl’s singles player for all four years of her high school career. The Saints play a handful of tennis matches during the fall semester and will play the bulk of their competitions in spring 2015. OLLU competes through the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the tennis teams are unaffiliated with a conference. Read full article online.

OLLU’s Matt Ellis selected as ‘Men’s Tennis Player of the Week’

2014MattEllis-4-wMatt Ellis has been selected as Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the dates Feb. 10-16, 2014. This is Ellis’ third Player of the Week honor. Previous recognition was during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 seasons. Ellis, a junior from El Paso, Texas, won all three singles matches during weekend competition. Ellis, along with Jacob Galaviz, won two out of three doubles they played together during weekend competition. Read full story online.

Tennis team to hold tryouts

tennistryoutsThe Saints women’s tennis team is looking for new players this season. Anyone interested in trying out for the team must have played at least two years of high school tennis or the equivalent of USTA tennis tournament experience.
