Men’s basketball defeats Texas College 82-73

The men’s basketball squad surged to a 82-73 win over Texas College (TC) on Nov. 26. The Saints jumped to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Steers are now 1-6 overall and 0-3 in conference.

Head Coach Marcus Thompson commented, “I’m proud of how the team played today. Texas College protects their court well and always plays tough. This was a tough conference road game for sure. The team did well battling adversity for a lot of things we can’t control. We had key players foul out early and the team did a good job of coming together and finding a way to win. This was a great team effort and I’m happy to get the win!”

The Saints were 18-10 against Texas College prior to the game.

Offensive/defensive standouts
Lonzo Rand led the Saints with 24 points, followed by Trey Law with 13. Law and Rob Gil had five rebounds apiece.

Texas College’s Ty’Quan Neal led the team with 19 points. Neal also led the squad with eight rebounds.

Inside the box
OLLU combined for 25-of-43 from the field for a percentage of 58.1. They shot 6-of-15 from three-point range for 40 percent and hit 26-of-33 free throws for 78.8 percent. Texas College shot 25-of-60 for a percentage of 41.7, 3-of-18 three-pointers for 16.7 percent and 20-of-29 free throws for 69 percent. OLLU added 19 rebounds to Texas College’s 25.

Women’s basketball outlasts Texas College 69-62

The women’s basketball team improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) after downing Texas College (TC) 69-62 on Nov. 26. The Steers drop to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the RRAC.

Head Coach Tanya Ray said, “This is always a hard place to play and we did what was necessary to get the win today. We were able to withstand their runs and were able to answer each time.”

History
The Saints were 25-2 against the Steers prior to the game.

Offensive/defensive standouts
Plata led the Saints with 25 points, followed by Carlea Owens and Samantha Fields with 14 apiece. Owens also led in rebounds with 13 for a double-double. Isabella Jaramillo assisted on seven plays.

Tyler Pyburn had 19 points for the Steers. She grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds to earn a double-double. Cree McClemore led the Steers with four assists.

Inside the box
OLLU combined for 24-of-54 shooting for 44.4 percent, 11-of-28 from three-point range for 39.3 percent and 10-of-13 from the free-throw line for 76.9 percent. Texas College shot 26-of-87 for 29.9 percent, 3-of-20 three-pointers for 15 percent, and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line for 63.6 percent.

Volleyball crushes Texas College 3-0

The volleyball team crushed Texas College (TC) 3-0 in both Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) matches on Oct. 25 an 26. The Saints’ defense kept the Lady Steers offense at bay, limiting them to a first-day -.134 and a second-day-.093 hitting percentage. The Saints improve to 18-7 overall and 11-1 in the conference, while Texas College drops to 0-14 and 0-12 in the conference.

History
The Saints have maintained an impressive record of 30-0 against the Lady Steers, never allowing a set win in these matches.

Match one – Oct. 25
The Saints quickly went up 6-0 before the Lady Steers could add a point. They kept TC to single-digit scoring until set point, and the Saints put the first set away 25-10.

In the second set, the Saints jumped to a 5-0 lead. After the Lady Steers added their first point of the set, OLLU went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 11-1. The Saints’ power was on full display as they won the set 25-5.

The final set was more of the same. Carly Dossett served five points to move the Saints to an 18-8 lead. TC added four more points as the Saints dominated to a 25-12 set win and a 3-0 match victory.

The Saints made only 10 errors on 85 total attacks for a .353 hitting percentage. They had 40 kills, 39 assists, and 56 digs while limiting the Lady Steers to 11 kills, 11 assists, and 30 digs.

Camila Ramirez led the Saints with eight kills on 14 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .429. Carly Dossett tallied 16 assists, and Chanisty Villarreal Bermea turned in nine digs.

Match two – Oct. 26
The Saints’ last home match of the regular season was a celebration of the achievements of seniors Julissa Casas, Camila Ramirez, and Tina Trevino. All four-year seniors with record-setting stats and impressive academic achievementsβ€”were honored and presented with a photo montage and flowers. In addition, spirit team member and senior Ginobili Cobarrubias was honored during the match.

The Lady Steers had a better outing on Saturday. While they were no match for the Saints, they reached double-digit scoring and trailed by only five points at 10-15. They got as close as four points against the Saints, but the OLLU closed out the first set 25-16.

In the second set, the teams tied at three, seven, and 14 before the Saints went on a 6-0 run to lead 20-14. OLLU completed the closest set of the series with a 25-16 win.

The Lady Steers continued to put plenty of effort in the third set, staying close to OLLU at the beginning. The Saints turned in multiple point runs to finish the set 25-13 and the match 3-0.

Anais Velasquez tallied seven kills in the match, while both Carly Dossett and Lauren Reynard added 11 assists each. Dossett also added four service aces, while Tina Trevino turned in 11 digs.

What’s next
Several of the Saints’ starting lineup stayed on the sidelines and only played one or two sets in the matches. They will get set for the series against Xavier University of Louisiana Nov. 1-2 at New Orleans and the University of the Southwest Nov. 8-9 at Hobbs, N.M. OLLU will host the RRAC Championship Tournament Nov. 15-16.

Men’s soccer downs Texas College 6-1

The men’s soccer team defeated Texas College (TC) 6-1 in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) matchup on Sept. 21.

Head Coach Shane Hurley commented, “After some initial lackluster energy, we stepped up and brought an improved willingness to get forward on and off the ball. We had improved energy in transition that helped us create opportunities and regain possession quickly. We need to continue to build upon our positives as there’s potential there. Coach Jesus Cortes and I are pleased with the energy the team grew into today.”

History
The Saints are 11-2-1 against the Steers. Last season, the Saints defeated TC 4-0. 

Basics
The Bulldogs scored first at the fifth minute by Anas El.  After a TC shot, Samuel Villegas had his header go wide right, and Pape Gueye shot one that went high. Villegas scored on the next play at the 15th minute unassisted. After one shot from the Steers that was saved by OLLU’s Dominic PenaNikola Saltchev found the back of the net on assists from Louis Nicholson and Stan Driessen. Six minutes later, Stan Driessen scored on an assist from Nicholson to give the Saints the 3-1 lead. The game stayed that way through the end of the first half.

The Saints controlled the offense at the beginning of the second half with shots on goal from Adrian Maldonado and Matthew Banda. At the 56th minute, Nicolas Murgas scored the Saints’ fourth goal on an assist from Driessen. At the 60th minute, Villegas scored his second goal and the Saints fifth on an assist from Saltchev. A little more than three minutes later, Villegas recorded a hat trick to give the Saints the 6-1 lead and win.

Dominic Pena played close to 70 minutes on goal and had three saves. Alejandro Avila played the final 20 minutes of the game. TC’s Emiliano Yanez played the whole game and recorded seven saves.

Women’s soccer defeats Texas College 9-0

The women’s soccer team shut out Texas College (TC) 9-0 in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) matchup Sept. 21.

Head Coach Victoria Vazquez commented, “We had a great offensive performance that took a while to come to fruition. However, I am proud of the patience we showed. Overall, it was a collaborative effort, and we will prepare for our next match.

History
The Saints are 15-0 against the Steers. Last season, the Saints defeated TC 14-0. The Saints have allowed just one goal against the team – in 2009, when they won 6-1. All other games have been shutouts.

Basics
The Saints took the first shot against the Steers after 25 seconds into the match. Vivianna Gutierrez‘s kick went wide left, and Lyndee Rheinberger followed 28 seconds later with a shot that went wide left. Allison Kostoch had the game’s first shot on goal just before the two-minute mark. The Saints proceeded to take four more shots on goal and six shots before Ijayla Criswell found the net for the Saints’ first goal. Katelyn Brandao assisted on the point.

The Saints continued to dominate with three more shots, four on goal before the women scored their second goal at the 35th minute. Sara Garza gave the Saints the 2-0 lead with the unassisted goal.

Two more shots, one on goal, preceded the Saints’ third goal at the 40th minute. Ez Valles found the back of the net to give the Saints the 3-0 lead. Just three minutes later, the Saints scored their fourth goal. Garza had her second goal of the game on an assist from Emerson Weiler. A fifth goal ended the first half. Garza logged her first collegiate hat trick when she scored off an assist from Valles.

The Saints marked seven shots and seven on goal before Rheinberger scored the team’s six goal off an assist from Samantha Benne at the 64th minute. Twenty-nine seconds later, Leah Tapia found the net on an assist from Weiler. Four shots, two on goal, preceded the team’s eighth goal from Dusty Van Huss, on an assist from Brandao. Three shots came before Lilliana Martinez scored OLLU’s ninth and final goal of the game on an assist from Bethany Garr.

Volleyball sweeps Texas College

The volleyball team swept Texas College (TC) in both matches on Friday and Saturday to open Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play. The Saints improve to 5-8 on the season. OLLU has never lost to Texas College with a 28-0 series record.

Head Coach Scott Mattera commented, “There were a lot of new faces on the floor this weekend as sickness sidelined nearly half our players and staff. I’m happy with the way so many performed in their first varsity action and the way experienced leaders like Madalyn Gonzalez and Tina Trevino kept the train on the tracks.”

Friday
Basics
The Saints totaled 38 kills against the Steers on Friday. Texas College struggled with negative hitting percentages in the first and third set. Madalyn Gonzalez had double-digit kills for the Saints while Deandra Ybarra assisted on every play besides three points. Seven different players for the Saints had at least one service ace.

The Saints followed the sweep on Friday with another impressive performance. They hit over .300 percent in every set, including a .652 hitting percentage in the second set with no errors. The Saints also tallied double digits in every frame and only allowed 11 kills by the Steers. Trevino and Ybarra both had double-digit digs.
