Six from volleyball win NAIA Scholar-Athlete awards

Six volleyball players have been named National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Daktronics Scholar-Athletes for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

OLLU’s honorees include:

Sophomore Ariana Caldera, a Criminal Justice/Forensic Science major, has been part of the team since 2022. She played in 6 matches and had 15 kills. She earned a 3.89 GPA.

Sophomore Mia Dorsey, an Individualized Business major, has been part of the team since 2022. She played in 25 matches, had 299 kills, 17 assists, 16 service aces, 192 digs and 51 blocks. She earned a 3.69 GPA.

Senior Madalyn Gonzalez, a Marketing major, has been part of the team since 2019. She played in 31 matches, had 174 kills, 50 digs and 84 blocks. He marked a 3.83 GPA.

Sophomore Evelyn Ortega, a Business Marketing major, has been part of the team since 2022. She played in 13 matches and had 25 digs. He earned a 3.58 GPA.

Sophomore Lauren Reynard, a Business and Computer Information and Systems and Security major, has been part of the team since 2022. She played in 29 matches, had 61 kills, 1,106 assists, 30 service aces, 190 digs and 24 blocks. She earned a 4.00 GPA.

Junior Tina Trevino, a Criminal Justice and Psychology major, has been part of the team since 2021. She played in 31 matches this season and accumulated 74 assists, 18 service aces and 519 digs. She earned a 3.85 GPA.

Volleyball loses five-set marathon in RRAC Championship match

The volleyball team lost a heartbreaking five-set match against Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) in the Red River Athletic Conference championship match. The Saints move to 19-12 on the season while the Gold Nuggets improve to 19-7.

OLLU won the first set, 25-17, lost the second set, 25-17, claimed the third set, 25-22 and dropped the fourth set, 19-17. In the deciding fifth set, the Saints fell, 19-17. 

Head Coach Scott Mattera commented, “I can honestly say I’ve never been more heartbroken for a team. We did so many things right and just didn’t come out on top. It’s not just pleasantries for me to say that I am proud of this group, how much they have grown and the type of people they are. We played some beautiful volleyball this year.”

Mia Dorsey and Madalyn Gonzalez were named to the RRAC All-Tournament team.

Saints volleyball sweeps pair of matches against Huston-Tillotson

The OLLU volleyball team swept both matches against Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) this weekend. The Saints improved to 16-11 overall and 13-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Rams drop to 4-18 overall and 3-9 in conference.

First match (Oct. 27)

The Saints opened the weekend series against the Rams with a sweep. OLLU held the Rams to under .100 hitting in the second and third set. Six different Saints recorded at least one kill and Lauren Reynard assisted on 36 plays. The Saints had six service aces and Tina Trevino tallied double-digit digs. The Rams came back from a six-point deficit in the second frame, but the Saints were able to hold on to win 25-23.

Second match (Oct. 28)

The Saints honored seniors Analisa Fernandez, Madalyn Gonzalez, Ashleigh Ramirez, Tory Rodriguez and Madelynn Strzelczyk prior to the match on Saturday. OLLU swept the Rams again and forced 21 errors by HTU. The Saints hit over .300 in the second and third set. The Rams were limited to -.179 hitting in the first set and .000 in the final frame. The Saints will host Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) for a pair of matches starting on Wednesday to close the regular season.

OLLU’s Gonzalez and Trevino named Academic All-District Volleyball honorees

Two from OLLU have been selected to the 2022 Academic All-District® Volleyball Team. The program recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

College Sports Communicators (formerly the College Sports Information Directors of American – CoSIDA), such as OLLU’s 16-year member Patricia Constantin, submit nominees for consideration. The organization boasts more than 3,000 members, and all are eligible to vote for all sports teams each year.

The two honorees are Madalyn Gonzalez and Tina Trevino. Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot.

Madalyn Gonzalez, a Marketing major, has been part of the Saints team since 2020. She played in 25 matches and 88 sets this year. She recorded 111 kills, 18 digs and 75 blocks. Gonzalez was named to the All-Conference Second Team and was the Champions of Character representative. She earned a 3.74 GPA.

Tina Trevino, a Criminal Justice major, has been part of the Saints team since 2021. She played in 24 matches and 85 sets this year. She marked 51 assists, 417 digs and 19 service aces. Trevino was named Co-Defender of the Year and was part of the All-Conference First Team. She earned a 3.90 GPA.
