Men’s golf earns second place at RRAC championships

The men’s golf team earned a second place finish out of six programs at the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Championships. The event was hosted by the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) at the Victoria Country Club and lasted three rounds.

Head Coach Arnie Martinez commented, “I’m proud of how our guys played. I’ve seen a lot of growth within the team and as individuals. There is still more to be done but I’m very proud of how we responded to an unfortunate first day. It’s tough to play a good team like UHV at their home course but we were up for the challenge. We didn’t execute as efficiently as they did. We talked before the last round, and I challenged them to show me their character by how they played and responded to yesterday. They came out and rose to the occasion by beating UHV on round three. It was good to see them finish off the season that way because they’ve worked hard. Every returning player on our squad understands what’s necessary to be successful in the future. I’m proud of how Oliver Gaisford played. He made the All-Conference team which is a great accomplishment, and he deserves it. We will be preparing for the fall 2023 season tomorrow. Go Saints.”

UHV took home the trophy after shooting 294/284/305=883. The Saints totaled 304/303/299=906 for second place, followed by Texas A&M University-San Antonio at 308/306/310=924, Louisiana College at 318/309/316=943, University of the Southwest at 339/331/358=1028 and Jarvis Christian University at 447/439/436=1322.

The Saints boasted four top 10 individual performances. Oliver Gaisford led the Saints in fourth place at 77/75/72=224. Massimo Garcia followed in sixth place at 76/75/75=226, Brandon Lopez in eighth at 76/75/76=227 and Diego Garcia Hernandez in ninth at 75/78/76=229. Sergio Garcia rounded out the Saints in the 16th spot at 79/81/80=240.

OLLU’s Raul Gonzalez wins first collegiate tournament

The men’s golf team completed the John Bohmann Memorial Invite sponsored by Texas Lutheran University at the Starcke Park Municipal Course.

Raul Gonzalez captured the individual title after shooting a six-under 207. He had a first-round 67, and second/third rounds of 70 to win his first collegiate tournament.

Head Coach Arnie Martinez commented, “It was a hot one out there. The guys did a good job preparing for the event, and we were happy to see a couple of our players play really well. Raul Gonzalez won the tournament and Massimo Garcia tied for second. I am very proud, not only of these two but of the whole team. This tournament shows how strong and deep our team is. These guys can do whatever they want on the course if they commit to the process of getting better. We still aren’t firing on all cylinders, but we are seeing our work start to improve. We will continue to get better. Good to see us trending in the right direction. Go, Saints!”

The Saints B team placed fourth with a final score of 872 (292/293/287). The OLLU A team came in fifth with an overall 875 (294/ 284/ 297). Men’s golf places fifth in Schreiner Spring Shootout

The men’s golf team competed in the Schreiner Spring Shootout this week at the Club at Comanche Trace in Kerrville, Texas. The Saints placed fifth out of 12 teams after shooting a first-round 301 and a second-round 306 for a total score of 614.

Head Coach Arnie Martinez commented, “The men played hard out there at this event. With high winds and fast greens, the course was playing harder than usual. Nonetheless, they stayed in it and grinded the whole day. As a coach, you expect them to play hard, and they did that. We struggled the first day getting the green speeds down, but we bounced back with better putting on Tuesday. We didn’t have our best event, but we made sure to learn from it. Our goal is a conference championship, and we will continue to work toward that. The grind to get better never stops, and won’t either. Go, Saints!”

McMurry University captured the tournament with an overall score of 601, followed by Trinity University at 602, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 606 and Concordia University Texas at 611. Southwestern University was sixth at 615, followed by the University of Dallas at 627, Texas Lutheran University at 632, the University of St. Thomas at 637, Hardin Simmons University at 644, Howard Payne University at 647 and Schreiner University at 661.
