Women’s basketball beats Jarvis for sixth consecutive conference win

The women’s basketball team remained unbeaten in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) with an 81-58 victory over Jarvis Christian College (JCC). The Saints improve to 9-10 overall and 6-0 in the RRAC. The Bulldogs drop to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference.  

History

The Saints were 22-3 against the Bulldogs prior to this matchup.

Basics

The Saints put on an impressive shooting performance against JCC on Saturday. They shot 40 percent from the field in the first quarter and 68.8 percent in the second quarter. Keviona Barber (SR/Chicago, Ill.) tallied 15 points in the first half and Makayla White (JR/Midwest City, Okla.) tacked on seven rebounds. OLLU held the Bulldogs to 27 points in the first two quarters. The Saints also forced 12 turnovers and 21 total rebounds.

The Bulldogs didn’t back down after halftime and totaled 20 points in the third quarter. They shot 60 percent from the field but still trailed by 19 points heading into the final quarter. OLLU finished strong in the fourth quarter by shooting 46.7 percent from the field and adding 10 rebounds. Cormia Lewis (SO/Houston, Texas) had three steals for the Saints and the team totaled 10.  OLLU remains undefeated in the RRAC and will look to continue its dominant play next Saturday.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Barber led the Saints with 20 points. White had a team-high 10 rebounds. Barber also recorded four assists for OLLU.

JCC was led by Makaila Cheatem with 24 points. Joi Reed had a team-high six rebounds. Four different Bulldogs had four assists each.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 30-of-71 shooting for 42.3 percent, 6-of-27 from three-point range for 22.2 percent and 15-of-19 from the free-throw line for 78.9 percent. JCC shot 25-of-64 for 39.1 percent, 5-of-20 three pointers for 25 percent and 3-of-5 from the free-throw line for 60 percent.

The Saints grabbed 49 rebounds while the Bulldogs collected 34. OLLU forced 20 turnovers and committed 16.
