MBA student wins seventh White House President’s Volunteer Service Award

Congratulations to MBA student Michael Garcia. For the seventh consecutive year, he has won the White House President’s Volunteer Service Award. Since 2014, Garcia has completed 909 community service hours as an OLLU student and alumnus.  In 2019, one year after earning his BBA, Garcia became the first OLLU student or alumnus to receive five consecutive presidential awards. Since 2015, he has received six bronze medals and one gold

Alumna, playwright and abuse survivor to present ‘If My Tears Could Talk’

Karen Chattum-Dozier (BA 2007, MA 2013) is a poet, playwright, novelist, motivational speaker and founder of a nonprofit, “WE SPEAK UP FOR THE VOICELESS, Inc.” She is also a survivor of child sex abuse.

Chattum-Dozier will bring her story and skills together with a performance of “If My Tears Could Talk” on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Thiry Auditorium. Face masks are required.

The performance is free. But donations will be accepted for “WE SPEAK UP,” which uses theatrical performance to empower family violence survivors to break cycles of abuse.

At OLLU, Chattum-Dozier earned a bachelor’s in Psychology and a master’s in Human Sciences.

Alumni to discuss impact of OLLU at ‘Women’s HerStory Month’ event

In celebration of OLLU’s 125th anniversary, four distinguished female alumni will share the impact of the university on their lives during “Carriers of the Legacy,” a “Women’s HerStory Month” virtual event that will be held on Friday at 12:30 p.m. 

The one hour panel discussion will feature University of Texas at El Paso professor Margie E. Padilla (BA 1998), OLLU trustee Lorena G. Gonzalez (BA 1989, PhD 2005), media relations specialist and Lone Star Emmy Award winner Jessica Ortiz (BA 2017) and Impact Director at City Year Boston Marika Azocar (BA 2013).
