OLLU volleyball announces the signing of Jackie Bautista from Odessa College

OLLU has announced the signing of transfer student Jaclyn “Jackie” Bautista to the 2014 Saints Volleyball Team that will begin competing in August 2014. Bautista attended Odessa College. She is a graduate of Austin High School in El Paso, Texas. Bautista is a 5’10” middle blocker. While at Odessa College, a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association, she earned All-Conference. The Saints ended their 2013 season as the No. 4 seed in the Red River Athletic Conference tournament semifinals. Their conference record was 9-4 and 15-12 overall. Read full article online.

Five OLLU athletes named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball student-athletes that have been named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. OLLU student-athletes Martin Hansson, Emily Backus, Alyssa Mora, Victoria Vazquez and Bryttany Willoughby are among the honorees.

2013MartinHansson2(1)Hansson, a senior on the men’s soccer team is receiving this award for the first time. Last year, he received the Champions of Character award, as well as conference scholar athlete honors. Read more online.

daktronicswsOLLU women’s soccer seniors Backus, Mora and Vazquez all three received the award last year. In addition, Backus has received the CoSIDA-Captial One Academic All-District Award, and all have been named conference scholar athletes in each of their years at OLLU. Read more online.

2013BryttanyWilloughby-2(1)Willoughby, a junior on the volleyball team, is also receiving this award for the first time. In her previous two years at OLLU, she has received conference scholar athlete honors, as well as the CoSIDA-Capital One Academic All- District Award. Read more online.

In order to be nominated as a Scholar Athlete by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.

Volleyball wins one of two matches in Oklahoma

The OLLU volleyball team ended the regular season with a loss and a win this past weekend. The Saints dropped two sets to three against Bacone College in Muskogee and won in three sets over Langston. The Saints end the regular season with a 9-4 record in the Red River Athletic Conference and 14-10 overall. Bacone finishes with a 9-4 conference and 19-10 overall record, while Langston drops to 3-10 in the conference and 7-16 overall.

The University of Texas at Brownsville ends the season as the top seed in the conference and in the NAIA with a 13-0 conference and 29-0 overall record. Wiley College (11-2/20-12) is the second seed in the conference, while Bacone is the third and OLLU is the fourth. The conference tournament will begin on Nov. 8 in Brownsville. OLLU will be matched up against No. 5-seeded University of St. Thomas and will play at noon. The winner of that match will play the semifinals match at 5:30 p.m., and the championship match will take place on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. Read more online.
