Installation Mass, reception for President Chávez was a memorable event

The recent Mass of Installation and Blessing – and subsequent reception – for Abel A. Chávez, MBA, PhD, the university’s 10th President, produced a large turnout and created warm memories.

San Antonio Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller was the main celebrant of the Mass and University Chaplain Father Kevin Fausz, CM, VU, concelebrated. Several dignitaries joined the Mass and reception, including former Mayor Henry Cisneros and alumna Veronica Salazar Escobedo (BA 1965) who served as readers.

Journalists from KENS-5 and Catholic Television San Antonio reported on the event as Dr. Chávez delivered inspiring remarks.

After the liturgy, 8-year-old Mariachi sensation Mateo Lopez regaled Dr. Chávez and guests during a reception filled with food, fun and fellowship in the Mall Area. To watch Lopez’s rendition of “El Rey,” click here.

With nearly two dozen images packed into 47 seconds, the slideshow mirrors the rapidfire pace of Dr. Chávez’ early tenure. He’s dined with students, met faculty and staff, engaged with local, state and national leaders, granted media interviews and celebrated milestones.

The first 100 days have been a whirlwind, marked by exciting news. On Wednesday, Bexar County Commissioner’s Court awarded OLLU $3.5 million for the Center for Children and Family. That amount brings the 100-day total of money raised to $15.3 million!
