Men’s soccer outlasts LSU-Shreveport 1-0

The men’s soccer team defeated LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) 1-0 on Saturday. The Saints improve to 4-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play. LSUS received votes in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll.

Head Coach Shane Hurley said, “This was a good win for our players due to a great team effort. It was nice to see all 21 players traveling completely switched on and in the moment.”

History

The Saints are 4-3 in the all-time series against the Pilots.

Basics

Norberto Lira (JR/Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico) scored in the 33rd minute in what would be the game-winning goal. There were five total yellow cards handed out during the match. Starting goalie Joseph Baker (SO/Llantwit Major, Wales, U.K.) played all 90 minutes and made six saves. The Saints picked up the 1-0 victory despite allowing 15 shots and committing 16 fouls.

Volleyball celebrates seniors after defeating Southwest in three sets

The volleyball team downed University of the Southwest (USW) 3-0 on Saturday. The Saints have won nine straight matches and are 10-1 overall and 6-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Saints celebrated Amanda Esparza (SR/San Antonio, Texas), Kalani Ketchens (SR/San Antonio, Texas), Alyssa Marquez (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.) and Anissa Tamez (SR/San Antonio, Texas) on Seniors’ Day. The Saints clinched the RRAC regular season title.

History

The Saints are 17-4 against USW all-time.

Basics

The Saints defeated the Mustangs in straight sets for the third time in eight days. OLLU tallied 40 kills and 98 total attacks. They won 25-17, 25-11, 25-13. The Saints tallied 16 kills in the second set and only four errors. OLLU enters the RRAC Tournament next weekend undefeated in conference play.

Baseball sweeps University of Houston-Victoria in four-game series

The baseball team swept the four-game series against University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) on Friday and Saturday. The Saints improve to 11-8 overall and the Jaguars fall to 2-7.

Head Coach Bryan Aughney commented, “It’s always nice to get a sweep and that’s our goal at home. Our starting pitching all weekend was really good. Ram Maldonado (JR/McAllen, Texas), Jose Ramirez III (JR/Donna, Texas), Alec Martinez (JR/Corpus Christi, Texas) and Brett Vasquez (SO/Mont Belvieu, Texas) were all very good. We have been working on our approaches offensively and it showed this weekend. We were patient at the plate, and we put a lot of hard baseballs in play. It was a solid weekend to lead us into Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play. We just need to continue to work and compete in every opportunity we have.”

History

The Saints and Jaguars are tied in the all-time series 12-12.

Game one

The Saints were on the brink of OLLU history in game one. They scored 19 runs in the victory, which is one short of the most runs scored in a single game in Saints history. OLLU tallied 19 hits and limited UHV to five. Starting pitcher Maldonado struck out six batters and allowed only one run.

The Saints had five different players with multiple hits. Robert Lopez (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and Joshua Colunga (SO/San Antonio, Texas) drove in three runs each. The bulk of the Saints runs came in the fourth inning with eight and the fifth inning with nine. OLLU won 19-1 and set the tone for the rest of the series.

Game two

The second game of the series was more competitive. OLLU led 2-0 after five innings after Mitchell and Dayton scored. The Jaguars tied the game in the seventh inning with two runs on two hits.

The Saints took back control of the game in the eighth inning. Robert Arredondo (JR/Corpus Christi, Texas) singled to center field with two outs to score Noah Rodriguez (SO/Victoria, Texas) and Matt Mihalov (SR/Conroe, Texas). OLLU held the lead and won 4-2. Ramirez pitched a spectacular game by allowing one hit in six innings.

Game three

Game three was similar to game two. The Saints led 3-0 after the third inning. The Jaguars scored one run in the sixth inning, but it wasn’t enough. Starting pitcher Martinez pitched a complete game and allowed four hits on one run.

Seven different Saints players tallied a hit and OLLU won 3-1. UHV’s starting pitcher Christian Garcia allowed seven hits in six innings of work.

Game four

The Saints closed the series in dominant fashion. They tallied 14 runs on 11 hits and one error. Starting pitcher Vasquez allowed only two hits in five innings of work. Adrian Gonzalez Jr. (JR/Weslaco, Texas) and Layne Klostermann (SO/Raymondville, Texas) pitched two innings each later in the game.

Jose Diaz (SR/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) smashed a home run and Jorge Collazo Jr. (JR/San Antonio, Texas) drove in three RBIs. Dayton and Lopez both batted 2-for-3 at the plate. The Saints won 14-5 to complete the sweep.

Up next

The Saints head to Seguin, Texas, to face Texas Lutheran University in a four-game series starting on March 16 at 3 p.m.

Volleyball takes down University of the Southwest in weekend series

The volleyball team defeated University of the Southwest (USW) 3-0 on Friday and Saturday. The Saints improve to 8-1 overall and are undefeated in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) at 5-0. Southwest falls to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the RRAC.

Head Coach Scott Mattera commented on the first match, “We really looked like a machine for about 75 percent of the match. We are starting to find a very consistent level of play, but we can’t have the little lapses like we did in the third set. Overall, I was very happy with our effort.”

Mattera also addressed the second match, “USW made some solid adjustments and their ball control was better. Our serve game wasn’t quite as good today and that allowed Southwest to have some more opportunities. Kalani Ketchens (SR/San Antonio, Texas) has grasped and owned our arm swing system and it shows in her ability to hit with easy power.”

Basics

The Saints were in control for the entire match against the Mustangs. OLLU had a hitting percentage of .475 and 46 kills. Lauren Woitena (FR/New Braunfels, Texas) recorded 13 kills and Anissa Tamez (SR/San Antonio, Texas) assisted on 28 plays. Southwest struggled with a .123 kill percentage and 13 errors.

Ketchens shined once again with 16 kills and a .400 kill percentage. Cassidy Haller (FR/Cibolo, Texas) tallied eight kills and 20 total attacks.

The men’s soccer team fell to University of the Southwest (USW) 3-2 on Saturday. The Saints fall to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). Southwest improves to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the RRAC.

Head Coach Shane Hurley commented, “I can’t take anything away from Southwest. Their players worked hard the entire game. While we were better in possession, Southwest did more with their chances.”

History

The Saints lead the all-time series over Southwest 11-5.

Basics

The Saints took an early lead with a goal from Mitchell Medrano (SR/Baytown, Texas) at the 24th minute. The Mustangs responded quickly with a strike from Matthew Alvarado to tie the game 11 minutes later. The Saints tallied three shots on goal and four corner kicks in the first half.

Miguel Barrera (SO/San Antonio, Texas) put the Saints ahead 2-1 only four minutes into the second half. Carlos Cabrera (SR/Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico) picked up the assist. Alvarado scored again for Southwest to tie the game at the 56th minute. The Mustangs took the lead a minute later with a goal from Luis Calvillo. Southwest held on to win 3-2. The Saints finished with six corner kicks and seven shots on goal.

Women’s soccer remains undefeated with victory over University of the Southwest

The women’s soccer team defeated Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) foe the University of the Southwest (USW) 1-0 in double overtime on Saturday. The Saints remain undefeated at 7-0 overall and climb to 4-0 in RRAC play. The Mustangs drop to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the RRAC.

Head Coach Arthur Salazar said, “It was a hard-fought game as expected. Southwest worked extremely hard, and we couldn’t produce as many clean looks as we had hoped. We had a handful of chances that we should have taken advantage of and didn’t. Unfortunately, our inability to put the game away continues to plague us, but the resilience the team showed today continues to be encouraging.”

History

The Saints lead the all-time series against Southwest 16-1. 

Basics

The Saints were in control of the game for most of regulation. Southwest kept up with the Saints’ pace in the first half, and both teams tallied two shots on goal. OLLU didn’t allow a corner kick by USW and took three of their own.

OLLU recorded three more corner kicks in the second half but were unable to connect for a goal. Both teams totaled nine fouls at the end of regulation, and the Mustangs drew a yellow card.

Baye Polansky (SR/Helotes, Texas) was the hero for the Saints in double overtime with a header to win the game. Jaylin Seto (JR/Houston, Texas) picked up the assist, and the Saints continued their unbeaten season.

Connor Kalisky and Tyler Davis selected to RRAC All-Tournament Team

Men’s basketball picks up road wins at Langston and Bacone

applewhite2-14-15The No. 21 ranked OLLU men’s basketball team defeated Langston University (LU) 84-75 in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) game on Friday. The Saints are now in a tie for second place with Wiley College in the RRAC standings with a 11-3 record. Louisiana State University-Alexandria is in first place with a 12-3 record.
