Men’s soccer falls to University of the SOuthwest

The men’s soccer team fell to University of the Southwest (USW) 3-2 on Saturday. The Saints fall to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). Southwest improves to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the RRAC.

Head Coach Shane Hurley commented, “I can’t take anything away from Southwest. Their players worked hard the entire game. While we were better in possession, Southwest did more with their chances.”

History

The Saints lead the all-time series over Southwest 11-5.

Basics

The Saints took an early lead with a goal from Mitchell Medrano (SR/Baytown, Texas) at the 24th minute. The Mustangs responded quickly with a strike from Matthew Alvarado to tie the game 11 minutes later. The Saints tallied three shots on goal and four corner kicks in the first half.

Miguel Barrera (SO/San Antonio, Texas) put the Saints ahead 2-1 only four minutes into the second half. Carlos Cabrera (SR/Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico) picked up the assist. Alvarado scored again for Southwest to tie the game at the 56th minute. The Mustangs took the lead a minute later with a goal from Luis Calvillo. Southwest held on to win 3-2. The Saints finished with six corner kicks and seven shots on goal.

Leading the Saints’ offense was Norberto Lira (JR/Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico) and Medrano with four shots each. Alvarado led the Mustangs with seven shots.

Overall, the Saints tallied 14 shots, with seven on goal. Southwest recorded 11 shots, nine being on goal.

USW’s Khalid Abdulkhalik was shown a yellow card at the 10th minute.

Women’s soccer remains undefeated with victory over University of the Southwest

The women’s soccer team defeated Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) foe the University of the Southwest (USW) 1-0 in double overtime on Saturday. The Saints remain undefeated at 7-0 overall and climb to 4-0 in RRAC play. The Mustangs drop to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the RRAC.

Head Coach Arthur Salazar said, “It was a hard-fought game as expected. Southwest worked extremely hard, and we couldn’t produce as many clean looks as we had hoped. We had a handful of chances that we should have taken advantage of and didn’t. Unfortunately, our inability to put the game away continues to plague us, but the resilience the team showed today continues to be encouraging.”

History

The Saints lead the all-time series against Southwest 16-1. 

Basics

The Saints were in control of the game for most of regulation. Southwest kept up with the Saints’ pace in the first half, and both teams tallied two shots on goal. OLLU didn’t allow a corner kick by USW and took three of their own.

OLLU recorded three more corner kicks in the second half but were unable to connect for a goal. Both teams totaled nine fouls at the end of regulation, and the Mustangs drew a yellow card.

Baye Polansky (SR/Helotes, Texas) was the hero for the Saints in double overtime with a header to win the game. Jaylin Seto (JR/Houston, Texas) picked up the assist, and the Saints continued their unbeaten season.

Connor Kalisky and Tyler Davis selected to RRAC All-Tournament Team

AllTournamentFollowing the completion of the 2015 Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Baseball Tournament, the conference’s coaches made their final selections for the event’s All-Tournament Team. Tyler Davis (JR/Weatherford, Texas) received the Gold Glove Award, which is given to a player who has exhibited superior individual fielding performance. Men’s basketball picks up road wins at Langston and Bacone

applewhite2-14-15The No. 21 ranked OLLU men’s basketball team defeated Langston University (LU) 84-75 in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) game on Friday. The Saints are now in a tie for second place with Wiley College in the RRAC standings with a 11-3 record. Louisiana State University-Alexandria is in first place with a 12-3 record. Overall the Saints are 17-4. LU is 12-7 overall and 9-5 in conference. Read more online.

On Saturday, the men’s team improved to 18-4 on the season and 12-3 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) after a defeating Bacone College (BC) 105-74 Saturday night. BC falls to 6-19 overall and 1-14 in conference. Read more online.
