Men’s soccer falls to University of the SOuthwest
The men’s soccer team fell to University of the Southwest (USW) 3-2 on Saturday. The Saints fall to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). Southwest improves to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the RRAC.
Head Coach Shane Hurley commented, “I can’t take anything away from Southwest. Their players worked hard the entire game. While we were better in possession, Southwest did more with their chances.”
History
The Saints lead the all-time series over Southwest 11-5.
Basics
The Saints took an early lead with a goal from Mitchell Medrano (SR/Baytown, Texas) at the 24th minute. The Mustangs responded quickly with a strike from Matthew Alvarado to tie the game 11 minutes later. The Saints tallied three shots on goal and four corner kicks in the first half.
Miguel Barrera (SO/San Antonio, Texas) put the Saints ahead 2-1 only four minutes into the second half. Carlos Cabrera (SR/Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico) picked up the assist. Alvarado scored again for Southwest to tie the game at the 56th minute. The Mustangs took the lead a minute later with a goal from Luis Calvillo. Southwest held on to win 3-2. The Saints finished with six corner kicks and seven shots on goal.
