Stacy Stephens inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame

Women’s basketball Head Coach Stacy Stephens was inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday. The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) hosts the induction event yearly.

Stephens recapped the night, saying, “I am extremely honored to be chosen for the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame. There are so many talented coaches and players in Texas that being selected to be inducted with my high school coach was an amazing moment.”

“I would like to thank the TABC for putting on such a wonderful event. I am so glad that I could share this moment in person and online with so many people that I love, and the support has been overwhelming. Buddy Hawkins was an amazing coach who taught his players how to think, communicate and make decisions. His impact on my playing and coaching career is hard to put into words. I will always be grateful that my fundamental understanding of basketball comes from such an amazing coach.”

She was joined by Carl Allen, Bill Doty, Erin Grant, Hawkins, Ken Loyd, Samantha Morrow and Robert Zamora at the TABC ceremony in San Antonio. Hawkins was Stephen’s coach at Winnsboro High School, marking the first time that a coach and player have been inducted at the same time. Stephens rebounds at Winnsboro are still ranked third nationally after 20-plus years.

During Stephens’ speech she said, “Today is proof of what can happen if you follow your dreams. I’m truly thankful to God for the blessings I’ve received throughout my life.”

Stephens will enter her third year guiding the women’s basketball team after a shortened 2020-2021 season due to COVID-19. The 2021-2022 season officially begins in the winter and will go on through early spring.

Stephens to be inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame

The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) announced the Class of 2021 for the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame. OLLU is proud of Women’s Basketball Head Coach Stacy Stephens for her selection to this year’s class. Stephens will be honored during the induction ceremony that will take place Saturday, May 15, 2021, in San Antonio.

Carl Allen, Bill Doty, Erin Grant, Buddy Hawkins, Ken Loyd, Samantha Morrow and Robert Zamora will join Stephens. “These players and coaches in the Class of 2021 are among the best of the best,” said TABC Executive Director Rick Sherley. “They exemplify excellence both on and off the court, resulting in positive impacts on their school and Texas high school basketball.”

Stephens had a stellar high school career. She played at Winnsboro High School in Winnsboro, Texas, where she led the Lady Raiders to three consecutive State Tournament appearances in 1998, 1999 and 2000. This included two State Championships in 1999 and 2000. Stephens was named All-State three times and All-State Tournament three consecutive years.

At OLLU, Stephens joined the women’s basketball staff in 2017 as assistant coach, and she was promoted to head coach in 2019. She guided the team to a NAIA National Tournament berth in 2018, and the Saints finished out their season in the semifinals of the NAIA National Tournament – the best finish for any team at OLLU.
