Men’s basketball falls to Xavier, 99-72

The men’s basketball squad struggled against a good offensive performance by Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) on Feb. 24. The Saints lost 99-72 to move to 13-14 overall and 10-11 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Gold Rush jump to 21-5 overall and 16-4 in the RRAC.

Trey Law and Rob Gil each scored 14 points to lead the Saints. Law also grabbed six rebounds and Gil had five assists.

Head Coach Chris Dial said, “I give credit to Xavier as they were the better team in every way. This was a rough road trip for a lot of reasons. We have a great opportunity to get back home, regroup, and get back to the things that contribute to competing.”

Men’s basketball defeats LCU for fourth straight victory

The OLLU men’s basketball team notched its fourth consecutive victory on Saturday, rolling past Louisiana Christian University (LCU), 86-60. The Saints jump to 13-12 overall and 10-9 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Wildcats drop to 5-19 overall and 3-15 in conference.

Trey Law and Breion Powell led the Saints with 14 points apiece. Three Saints players grabbed a team-high five rebounds each. Rob Gil led OLLU with seven assists.

Men’s basketball sets season high in victory over Southwest

Led by Daniel Helterhoff’s 21 points and nine rebounds, the OLLU men’s basketball team downed the University of the Southwest (USW) 103-92 on Saturday. 

The 103 points represented a season high for OLLU. The victory qualified the Saints for the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament (RRAC).

The Saints jump to 11-12 overall and 8-9 in the RRAC. The Mustangs fall to 6-14 overall and 6-12 in the RRAC.

Trey Law scored 17 points for OLLU. Rob Gill added 11 points and seven assists.

The men’s basketball team lost to Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) 88-81 on Jan. 6. The Saints move to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Gold Rush improve to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in conference.

Trey Law led the Saints with 20 points. Daniel Helterhoff grabbed eight rebounds for OLLU. Rob Gil tallied seven assists.

Men’s basketball defeats HTU for first conference victory

The OLLU men’s basketball team downed Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) 80-76 on Dec. 9 in Austin. The Saints earned their first Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) win of the season to move to 1-2 and 4-5 overall. The Rams drop to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in conference.

Head Coach Chris Dial said, “The players overcame quite a bit of adversity in this win and I was really proud of them for showing resilience. We were short-handed with injuries and struggled with rebounds early, but we stepped up the intensity, effort and energy. Xavier Purnell played excellent off the bench tonight, especially in the first half. Paul Minjoth started knocking down big shots and provided us with great rebounding. I’m proud we recorded our first conference win of the season and I’m looking forward to two tough matchups next week.”

Trey Law led the Saints with 16 points. Lonzo Rand finished with six rebounds. Rob Gil tallied nine assists for the Saints.

Men’s basketball opens season with loss to Panhandle State

The OLLU men’s basketball team fell to Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU) 70-67 to open the season. The Aggies improve to 2-0 while the Saints start 0-1.

Basics

Both teams shot over 45 percent from the field in the first half. The Aggies grabbed 13 more rebounds than the Saints and Rob Gil had seven points. The score was knotted at 36-36 heading into halftime. The Saints forced four turnovers by the Aggies in the first frame.

Missed free throws and being outrebounded stung the Saints in the second half. The Saints shot better than OPSU from the field but only hit 3-of-7 free throws. The Aggies shot 75 percent from the free-throw line and made timely free throws when the Saints were forced to foul late in the game. Breion Powell, Trey Law and Gil finished with double-digit points.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Gil led the Saints with 12 points. Powell grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Three different Saints players had two assists each.
