Six basketball players earn NAIA Scholar-Athlete recognition

Six OLLU basketball players – four men and two women – have been named 2024 Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes. To be recognized, athletes must carry a cumulative 3.5 grade point average or higher.

From the men’s team, Daniel Helterhoff and Paul Minjoth both earned a 4.0. Kyonte Holder marked a 3.97 and Xavier Purnell earned a 3.66. 

Cormia Lewis and Lorena Ramirez also earned Scholar-Athlete recognition. Ramirez carried a 4.0, Lewis a 3.64.

Men’s basketball sets season high in victory over Southwest

Led by Daniel Helterhoff’s 21 points and nine rebounds, the OLLU men’s basketball team downed the University of the Southwest (USW) 103-92 on Saturday. 

The 103 points represented a season high for OLLU. The victory qualified the Saints for the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament (RRAC).

The Saints jump to 11-12 overall and 8-9 in the RRAC. The Mustangs fall to 6-14 overall and 6-12 in the RRAC.

Trey Law scored 17 points for OLLU. Rob Gill added 11 points and seven assists. 

Men’s basketball falls to Texas College

The men’s basketball team fell short against Texas College (TC) 81-72 on Jan. 25. The Saints move to 8-11 overall and 5-8 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Steers improve to 15-5 overall and 11-3 in conference play. 

Paul Minjoth led the Saints with 20 points. Daniel Helterhoff grabbed seven rebounds for OLLU. Rob Gil tallied four assists.

Men’s basketball falls to Xavier University of Louisiana

The men’s basketball team lost to Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) 88-81 on Jan. 6. The Saints move to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Gold Rush improve to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in conference.

Trey Law led the Saints with 20 points. Daniel Helterhoff grabbed eight rebounds for OLLU. Rob Gil tallied seven assists.
