Jonathan Yanez prepares for San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon on Dec. 7

Yanez11-25Relishing a top 100 finish in the 2014 NAIA Men’s National Cross-Country National Championship – the 91st finish was the best ever for a Saint – cross-country and track and field runner Jonathan Yanez now switches his efforts to something a little more demanding. Yanez, a 29-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran who is in his second year at OLLU, will be running in the half marathon of the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll (RnRSan Antonio) Marathon on Sunday. Yanez is running in the half marathon, which is 21.0975 kilometers, or 13.1094 miles, as a way to qualify for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Marathon Championship that will take place in May 2015. The standards to qualify for the NAIA Marathon Championships are to finish a half marathon in 1:14 for the “B” standard and 1:12 for the “A” standard.

Yanez, a single father of four, says his goal this year is to stay healthy through track and field, which begins its official inaugural season in the spring. The RnR San Antonio race starts and finishes near the Alamodome. The OLLU community is encouraged to come out and support Yanez at the start and at the finish of the race. Everyone who attends will get a free OLLU T-shirt and some noisemakers to cheer him on. The city will provide shuttle transportation – visit the site here for information and directions.
